Me and my friend saurabhsuryawanshi31 created a beautiful tree-themed home decor using laser cutting. This project involved designing, troubleshooting, and experimenting with materials until I achieved the perfect result. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the full process—from design to final decoration—so you can recreate it yourself.

Supplies

Software:

  1. CorelDRAW (for design)
  2. LaserCAD (for laser cutting preparation)

Materials:

  1. 6 mm cardboard (initial attempt)
  2. 3 mm plywood (final material)
  3. Paint (Black & Green)
  4. LED strip (optional for decoration)

Tools:

  1. Laser cutting machine
  2. Chiller (cooling system)
  3. Pen drive (to transfer files)

Creating the Design

I started by designing the tree in CorelDRAW, with some help from AI tools for inspiration and structure.

  1. Created a detailed tree design with branches and leaves
  2. Exported the file as a DXF file for laser compatibility

Fixing Design Issues

When I imported the DXF file into LaserCAD, I noticed a problem:

  1. Some parts of the design were breaking or not properly connected

Solution:

  1. Went back to CorelDRAW
  2. Modified the design
  3. Converted the design into a bitmap image
  4. Re-imported into LaserCAD

Preparing the File for Cutting

Inside LaserCAD:

  1. Adjusted the dimensions according to my requirement
  2. Set the cutting parameters
  3. Exported the file as a UD5 file
  4. Transferred the file to the laser machine using a pen drive

Setting Up the Laser Machine

Before cutting, I followed this setup process:

  1. Turned ON the laser machine
  2. Turned ON the chiller
  3. Waited until temperature dropped to 24–25°C
  4. Loaded the file into the machine
  5. Set the origin point
  6. Used the “Box” function to check alignment of the material

First Attempt (Using Cardboard)

I used 6 mm cardboard for my first attempt.

Problem:

  1. The cardboard started burning during cutting

What I Tried:

  1. Adjusted speed and power settings multiple times
  2. Re-uploaded and tested several times

👉 But the issue still continued.

I do so small speed and power , cardboard didn't burned at this time but not cut completely.

Identifying the Real Problem

After many trials, I discovered the actual issue:

  1. The leaf details in the design were too small
  2. When the laser cut nearby areas, small sections overheated and caught fire

Changing the Material

Instead of redesigning everything again, I decided to:

  1. Switch from cardboard to 3 mm plywood

Result:

  1. Much cleaner cutting
  2. No burning issues
  3. Strong and smooth finish

Final Cutting

Set optimized speed and power for plywood

Cut the final tree design successfully

Re-cut another piece for my partner who is working with me in this project

Painting & Decoration

To enhance the look:

  1. Painted one tree black
  2. Painted another green
  3. Added an LED strip to the black tree for a glowing effect

đź’ˇ Tips & Learnings

  1. Avoid very tiny details in laser cutting designs for cardboard.
  2. Always test materials before final cutting
  3. Cardboard can burn easily—use plywood for better results
  4. Proper speed and power settings are critical
  5. Patience is key—trial and error improves results

This project taught me a lot about design optimization, material selection, and laser cutting techniques. If you're planning a similar project, focus on design thickness and material choice to avoid common mistakes.
