How To Grow Plants Without Soil? | Hydroponic Farming At Home | The Dr Binocs Show | Peekaboo Kidz

Explanation for Students

Hydroponics is growing plants using nutrient-rich water instead of soil.

Key Concept to Explain

  1. Plants need:
  2. Water 💧
  3. Nutrients 🧪
  4. Light ☀️
  5. Soil is just a medium — not necessary!

What to Do

  1. Measure and mark equal spacing on pipe (50cm standard )
  2. Mark positions for plant 5cm lines
  3. use hex saw to cut
  4. use sand paper to clean the bur

Mentor Instructions

  1. Demonstrate cutting
  2. Let students mark positions

⚠️ Safety:

  1. use table clamp to hold pipe firmly
  2. follow safety rules(gloves, glasses)

3 holes

What to Do

  1. heat 5 cm cuts with hot air gun
  2. insert 2inch pipe to make proper hole
  3. let it cool down
  4. check pods fitting

⚠️ Safety:

  1. use table clamp to hold pipe firmly
  2. follow safety rules(gloves, glasses)

What to Do

  1. seal and water proof pots with hot glue
  2. slide laser cut ring on pvc pipe
  3. drill a small hole for wire to come out in pvc pipe
  4. Fix pipe in pot

Mentor Notes

  1. Check stability
  2. Avoid tilting

What to Do

  1. Place pump in pot
  2. Connect pump to usb power supply
  3. insulate wires with heat shrink and water proof by putting hot glue on joint
  4. connect tube to water pump (ensure other end of tube reaches top)
  5. add strainer on top and pass tube though it
  6. Allow water to flow downward

Teaching Explanation

  1. Gravity helps distribute water
  2. Roots absorb nutrients as water flows

Planting

What to Do

  1. Place seedlings in cups
  2. Ensure roots reach water

Good Plants for Students

  1. Mint 🌿
  2. Spinach 🥬
  3. Lettuce 🥗

Testing the System

What to Check

  1. Water flow is smooth
  2. No leakage
  3. Pump working properly

Mentor Tip

Ask students:

“What happens if water stops?”

Encourage critical thinking.

Automation Using ESP32

What to Add

  1. Relay to control pump
  2. Timer-based ON/OFF system
  3. neopixel led for ambient lighting
  4. LDR Based light control
