🌱 Smart Vertical Hydroponics System
📌 Overview
This project demonstrates how to grow plants without soil using a vertical hydroponics system. It also introduces students to:
- Sustainable agriculture
- Water-efficient farming
- Basic engineering and design thinking
- Optional: automation using microcontrollers
🎯 Learning Objectives
By the end of this project, students will:
- Understand hydroponics (soil-less farming)
- Build a vertical growing structure
- Learn safe usage of tools
- Understand water flow systems
- (Optional) Learn basics of IoT & automation
Supplies
Materials Required
Structure
- PVC pipes (75mm diameter)
- plastic pots(110/140 mm opening diameter)

Understanding Hydroponics
Explanation for Students
Hydroponics is growing plants using nutrient-rich water instead of soil.
Key Concept to Explain
- Plants need:
- Water 💧
- Nutrients 🧪
- Light ☀️
- Soil is just a medium — not necessary!
Design Pods
design pods of length 50mm width 50mm and hight 50mm
Preparing the PVC Pipes
What to Do
- Measure and mark equal spacing on pipe (50cm standard )
- Mark positions for plant 5cm lines
- use hex saw to cut
- use sand paper to clean the bur
Mentor Instructions
- Demonstrate cutting
- Let students mark positions
⚠️ Safety:
- use table clamp to hold pipe firmly
- follow safety rules(gloves, glasses)
Cutting and Fitting Cups
What to Do
- heat 5 cm cuts with hot air gun
- insert 2inch pipe to make proper hole
- let it cool down
- check pods fitting
⚠️ Safety:
- use table clamp to hold pipe firmly
- follow safety rules(gloves, glasses)
Setting Up Vertical Structure
What to Do
- seal and water proof pots with hot glue
- slide laser cut ring on pvc pipe
- drill a small hole for wire to come out in pvc pipe
- Fix pipe in pot
Mentor Notes
- Check stability
- Avoid tilting
Creating Water Flow System
What to Do
- Place pump in pot
- Connect pump to usb power supply
- insulate wires with heat shrink and water proof by putting hot glue on joint
- connect tube to water pump (ensure other end of tube reaches top)
- add strainer on top and pass tube though it
- Allow water to flow downward
Teaching Explanation
- Gravity helps distribute water
- Roots absorb nutrients as water flows
Planting
What to Do
- Place seedlings in cups
- Ensure roots reach water
Good Plants for Students
- Mint 🌿
- Spinach 🥬
- Lettuce 🥗
Testing the System
What to Check
- Water flow is smooth
- No leakage
- Pump working properly
Mentor Tip
Ask students:
“What happens if water stops?”
Encourage critical thinking.
Automation Using ESP32
What to Add
- Relay to control pump
- Timer-based ON/OFF system
- neopixel led for ambient lighting
- LDR Based light control
- temperature and humidity monitoring using DHT11
Learning Outcome
Students learn:
- Basic coding
- Automation
- Smart farming
