Alien Cat Earrings

IMG_4232.jpg

I got this idea when I saw earrings made using pom poms, so I wanted to turn pom poms into an animal (like cat, bear, or rabbit). But when I looked at the variety of pom poms I had lying around, there wasn't enough 'natural fur' colours available. I realized the green could still be used to make a cat. That is, an alien cat (look it up to see what I'm talking about).

estimated time to make: 1-1.5hr

Supplies

materials

4 of 2cm diameter green pom poms

2 earring hooks

2 0.5cm wide jump rings

~8cm of thin (~0.3 cm wide) green pipe cleaner, cut into four pieces ~2cm each

small piece (~3.5 cm x 1 cm) of green felt or white felt drawn green with marker

black/brown marker

4 black beads or black marker or 4 safety eyes

silicone earring backs for hook earrings (you could borrow from your own hook earrings)

tools

hot glue or fabric glue

pliers

scissors

Ears

If you are using white felt, draw with green marker (try different shades) on both sides. Cut out 4 ear shapes out of around 3.5 cm x 1 cm of felt.

Antenna

Cut a 8cm piece of pipe cleaner, then cut into 4 equal pieces ~2cm each. Using pliers, bend the end of half of the pieces to create the small round part of the 'antenna'. Connect the jump rope to the earring. Repeat on the other earring. On the other half of antennas connect the 2 jump rings, then bend.

Glueing Parts

Glue the each set of pom poms together for the head and body (a small dot of glue will do). Glue on the ears (thinly on the edge). Glue the pipe cleaners (I just stick the end into the glue gun) and stick them in between the ears, making sure the antenna with the jump ring is on opposite sides of the other cat. Repeat on second cat. If you're glueing on eyes, do that (small safety eyes or beads) (I use tweezers/pliers to hold the bead while I glue the other end then I stick it on the cat and hold it until it sets).

Nose/Mouth

Using the black sharpie, draw on the eyes if you haven't glued them on already. Using the brown marker, draw on the nose and mouth. Repeat on second cat.

This is an example of it on my ear. You can try which ear makes it face better. Also, don't forget to use earring backs.
