Backyard Log Cabin Built by Hand for Under 200 Dollars
I really wanted a nice log cabin in the woods. So one day after school I decided I was gonna build one. So after 2 months here I am. the proud owner of a backyard cabin. I had to cut down around 25 or so trees to make this 12x14 cabin. I have plans in the future to "finish" it but for now this is perfectly fine for the occasional camping trip. So heres a not so comprehensive guide on how I did it. This is more of a You CAN do this for cheap and if a 16 year old can do it so can you.
Supplies
I used mainly hand tools to construct this, but you could use things like a chainsaw. I used:
An Axe
Hatchet
2 inch nails
3 inch nails
1 inch nails
3 tarps
5 sheets of osb
a hammer
salvaged window and door
a stove
a sawzall
cinder blocks
Notching
Each layer has to be notched in order to construct a stable log cabin, i used the Norwegian saddle notch to create this. I also used a simple cinder block foundation
Floor
I used scrap wood wo create a semi level floor system ontop of the foundation logs, then i put osb for subfloor.
Chinking
I used a common cob chinking to make this. Mix a combination of dirt, clay, straw and sand. If it dries before rain, it will hold very very well.
Roof
I used thin saplings to construct a roof, then put a tarp ontop.
Stove
I used a cheap camping wood stove to heat the cabin as well as cook
Use
So far, I have used this cabin for camping, but you could use it for more if you wanted to!
