Brainstorming
These are our early sketches for an idea of our project. The first one focuses on attracting dogs by making the design a dangly object, but we quickly realized that would be a poor idea for a motion sensor as constant motion would occur. Our second idea was to create a small box for a motion sensor and a tiny paw at the bottom left corner of it, but we found the shape displeasing. Our third design was cylinder-like with a giant paw on the front of it. We found this one to be the best because it was aesthetically pleasing and could be realistically created for practical use.
3D Designing
We started designing the motion sensor's exterior by first creating an overall short cylinder shape. The diameter was 6.5 inches with a height of 1.5-2 inches. We split the design into 2 parts to create an opening to insert the circuit into. On the bottom part, we cut a 1 inch diameter hole for the PIR sensor to peek out of and function. At the top of the design, we created a paw shape that we extruded to bring more shape and personalization to the design.
3D Printing
This is our final design in OnShape before physically printing the design.
Painting Project
Because the filament was all white, we decided to further decorate the project by painting the exterior. We went with a black undercoat and a purple color for the paw to stand out.
Arduino Design
This is our finished online circuit, utilizing an Arduino uno, a breadboard, and a code for the motion sensing by using a PIR Sensor. We simulated the circuit online before building the physical product.
Circuit
This is our physical product of the circuit. It includes a PIR sensor for motion tracking, wiring, a port for a battery, an LED to measure response, and a 200 ohm resistor. For the entire design, we cannot use the black foundation for the Uno and the breadboard(as seen in photo) because it does not provide the space that we originally accounted for.
Final Product
This is what our project ended up looking as. It's sturdy, sustainable, and effectively works at detecting nearby motion.
