Best Fabric for Bleach Art: Cotton Vs Polyester (Real Test)
If you’re trying bleach art on clothing, choosing the right fabric is everything.
Many beginners make the mistake of using polyester or mixed fabrics — and end up with no visible result at all.
In this guide, I’ll show the real difference between cotton and polyester when working with bleach.
Supplies
Black 100% cotton t-shirt or hoodie
Polyester t-shirt (for comparison)
Bleach (standard household bleach)
Brushes (different sizes)
Water
Protective gloves
Plastic sheet or surface protection
Paper towels or cloth
What Happens With Cotton
100% cotton is the best fabric for bleach art.
When bleach is applied, it reacts with the dye and removes color, creating strong contrast. This is what makes detailed designs possible.
Cotton also absorbs the liquid well, allowing you to control lines and shading.
What Happens With Polyester
Polyester does not react properly with bleach.
In most cases:
- nothing happens
- or the reaction is extremely weak
This is because polyester fibers are synthetic and do not hold dye in the same way as cotton.
Cotton Vs Polyester (Quick Comparison)
Cotton:
✔ strong visible effect
✔ good for detailed artwork
✔ predictable result
Polyester:
✖ little or no reaction
✖ hard to control
✖ not suitable for bleach art
Best Choice
For best results, always use:
- 100% cotton
- black or dark fabric
- medium or heavy weight material
This gives you the highest contrast and the most control.
Real Comparison
I tested both fabrics side by side to show the actual difference in real conditions.
