Bringing Storybird.com Into Your Classroom
Storybird.com is a wonderful writing resource to use in your classroom. As a teacher, there are many qualities you can find in this website.
By using the following steps, you can bring Storybird.ca into your classroom!
Explore Storybird
The first step to bringing Storybird.ca into your classroom is to explore the website! You must become well acquainted with the website. As a teacher, there are many advantages to using Storybird.
When you want to create your Storybird, the first step is picking your first image to go along with your words. My selecting "Start with art", you can select your first image for your story. There are many images to pick from. The more you write and create, the more badges and crowns you will collect. By collecting more badges and crowns, it will open up more picture options.
Under the main heading, "Classes", you will find:
"Review": As a teacher, you can assess the creations your students have made.
"Library": Your students can share their creations for the whole classroom to see.
"Assignment": You can create work for your students to do. You can chose to create assignments for your students and they will see the guidelines under each assignment.
"Fundraiser": You can sell the Storybird creations that your students create for you school.
"Downloads": You can download and print your students Storybird creations. With this feature, you can have examples for future students to look to when creating their own Storybird. This is also a valuable skill for showing examples of student work at conferences with parents.
Under the main heading, "You", you will find your dashboard. On this, you will find everything you have created, as well as how many badges and crowns you have.
As a teacher, fully explore the website before allowing your students to access it. By having a full understanding of the website, you can explain fully explain it to your students. Enjoy your exploring!
Read Fellow Storybird User's Creations
Under the main heading, "Read", you will find three subheadings: "Stories", "Poetry", "Blog".
Explore these three heading to find inspiration for your assignments. Teacher's can find examples of stories for their students to look toward. By exploring and finding quality examples, you can inspire your students to create work, not only in your classroom, but throughout their lives.
Create Your Own Storybird Creation
There are many ways you can go about creating your own Storybird. At the main heading, you can choose:
"Start with Art": This is an option where you can find art to suit a story you already have in mind. By selecting the first picture, your story begin to be created. Storybird will choose art that follows your first pick for you to choose from while creating your story.
"Start with Challenge": This is an option where you can select a challenge that inspires you. There are many options under this heading to explore.
"How-To Guide": This is an option if you would like more direction about writing. This is also an interesting and helpful guide for students. As a teacher, if you chose to teach a specific lesson in writing, you could turn to Storybird to see if there is a How-To Guide as a different teaching option.
When Creating Your Storybird
The first picture you select will become your first page.
Options on the page:
"+": To add pages. After you have added another page, you can select the illustration to go along with it by dragging it onto the page and adding text.
"-": To delete pages
"< >": To move from page to page
There is a "Save" and "Save and Exit" option.
Title Page: There are four options for your title page, "Classic", "Landscape", "Journal", and "Iconic". You can change the colour of your background.
When you have finished your story, simply select "Save and Exit". When you reach the next screen, you can decide whether to share your creation with the public or not. You may create a summary of your story for the public to see.
When you are done your creation, simply select "Publish" and begin your next creation.
Share Storybird With Your Classroom
The last step is to share Storybird with your students. You can share these steps and the wonderful creations you have found with your classroom. By sharing different ways of writing, you can inspire your students to keep creating throughout their lives.
