Chess Jacket

This is denim jacket with an attached chess game: it makes it portable! Jacket should be removed before playing.

Light-colored denim jacket

Fabric chessboard (I indigo-dyed mine: I will publish an Instructable on the topic)

3D-printed chess pieces, see files

PLA filament in contrasting colors

Sewing supplies including snaps and fabric marker

"Wonder Under" or "Heat & Bond" or similar paper for attaching board to jacket

I indigo-dyed my chessboard, but you could just paint the black squares with gouache (see my Furoshiki tutorial) or use fabric markers. Don't forget to set the finished project by ironing the completed chessboard.

You are welcome to use my design but remember that they are specific to the snaps I used.

Either use the same diameter snaps or adjust the hole dimension to accomodate your snaps.

Print one light-colored set and a dark-colored set.

There is an extra queen and knight.

The files are available for free on Thingiverse: the name of the project is "Snap Chess Pieces."

I used Tinkercad to design the pieces.

Use strong glue and let them set awhile.

Attach the chessboard to the jacket: first adjust the size of the board; you might have to cut the edges a little.

You can either sew it or use a specialty sticky paper like Wonder Under.

Be sure to use the proper material: buy one that allows for sewing (some don't and it's a pain if you have to sew through the thick stuff.)

Pay attention to the board's orientation: I believe it's best to have the sides side by side (as opposed to top and bottom).

Follow the instructions for the latter.

Once attached, you can add A through H and the digits 1 through 8.

Optional: you could use fabric markers and write down chess rules on the sleeves or front part.

This is the most time-consuming step. Breathe and take it easy. Sew a few at a time and rest. Choose good music and sew away!

Be careful to sew the proper half of the snap couple to the jacket; also, pay attention to the orientation (top/bottom).

Sew an extra snap to remember whose turn it is.

This is the most satisfying step: admire your handywork afterward.

Quickly wear the jacket and invite a friend to play with you.

Remove the jacket and play!
