Concrete Candle Jar

Welcome to my instructable, here i'm gonna show you the simplest way to make candle jar using Art concrete and fusion between art concrete and cement. I didn't any fancy moulds for the concrete jar, you can also make the same using your existing plastic jar or similar. Let's see how to make this happen.

Concrete jar supplies

1) Art concrete - 200 grams

2) Cement and sand mixture - 150 grams

3) Old used cup - (your choice, i'm using a plastic cylindrical cup and spray bottle to provide space for candle)

4) Mini stones - i used gold stones, coloured stones and moonstone

5) Gold Flakes (optional)

Candle making supplies

1) Soy wax - 150 grams

2) Pre waxed thread - 2 nos

3) Wick holder - 2 nos

4) Fragnance oil / essential oil - few drops (optional)

5) Mould and paper cup

First put plastic wrapper inside the base cup and plastic wrap the spray cap exterior, this is for easy removal of our concrete jar once it dried, keep out and check out the wall thickness whether it suits your requirement. i have given 12 mm wall thickness, which is optimal and looks elegant when added mini stones on top

Mix your art concrete as per ratio mentioned in art concrete, here is 3:1 ratio, i.e., 3 parts of concrete powder and 1 part of water, after mixing it comes in paste consistency. First add approx 50 grams of art concrete into base cup, after place the spray bottle to create the wall thickness by seating it properly in center, don't press the bottle and we need 12mm thickness of art concrete at bottom too. Also i had a crazy idea of combining art concrete and cement in same jar. so accordingly i poured base as art concrete in slighting way and let it dry for 3 hours.

Mix cement and sand in 1:1.25 ratio, add less water and mix it in thick consistency, now pour cement upto to top level with some clearance on top.

Before drying, add stones on top of it.. so it gets fixed on dried cement

Now demould the setup after 24 hrs, so the cement gets dried up very good, since we have added plastic wrapper, it should be a easy job to pull of the box, that's first step, once its out of box, pull the inserted spray can, Ta-da you get you concrete jar without using silicone mould at all. Plastic wrapper gave a wrinkle look... which i wanted for this specific look.

Even though i liked both parts (concrete and cement) attached together, i thought of creating new design, since we added cement after full drying of concrete, we pulled it apart easily without breaking it with little manual strength. In order to let light out in dramatic way, arrange some transparent/translucent stone on base art concrete and checked out design it looked way better than normal setup. so we pasted the stones using hot glue and placed the cement part on top of it, giving a clear way for light to shine thorough.

Spread clear glue or Elmer's glue, keep the gold flakes and it gets dried up sticking to the concrete surface.

I have used mini mug as base cup here, cover it with plastic cover. Inside used a shampoo bottle exterior wrapped with plastic again. Pour art concrete at bottom for 10 mm and place the bottle on it.

After placing bottle, pour art concrete upto 3 cm height and place few stones as decor and pour again a layer of art concrete again. Top it up with colour stones on top.

so this dries up in 3-4 hours, after that you can put it out easily and unwrap the plastic cover too. Remove the bottle. Ta-da your second candle holder is ready to use

I have used soy wax here, use double boiler method to melt the candle, here two candle setup have been kept for two jars made, beforehand i measured the space available to place the candle, for the second model. space is very narrow. so used narrow candle mould for that. Another i used a paper cup itself. After Soy wax completely melting, add fragnance oil (if required) and pour.

After few hours, demould the candle. Place it inside the concrete jar and check out the view.. since we provided a gap inbetween the cylindrical jar, isn't it too nice and gives a better ambience.. you can use this as for you special candle light dinner dates..
