Concrete Monster Wheelchair Ramp
This project is meant to be a simple and easy-to-learn example of how, with basic materials and practical ideas, people can expand the function and accessibility of their home.
With a genuine commitment to inclusion, it is possible to create cheerful and encouraging “helping monsters”: practical supports that stand by prams, walkers, and wheelchairs every day. They are friendly, useful, and designed to become a natural and indispensable part of daily life.
Supplies
Materials
• Sculpting concrete / kneadable concrete
• Protective mask and gloves
• Optional: concrete colour or pigment — available in many colours
• A piece of plastic, a plastic bag, plastic sheet, or a rubbish bag
• Water
• Materials for making impressions, for example screws, tins/cans, bottle caps, or pipes
Define and Clean the Area
Step 1 — Define and clean the area
Choose the place where the object will be made or installed, then clean the surface thoroughly.
Lay Down Plastic Sheeting
Step 2 — Lay down plastic sheeting
Cover the area with plastic sheeting, plastic film, or a cut-open rubbish bag. This prevents the concrete from sticking to the surface underneath.
Mix and Knead the Concrete
Step 3 — Mix and knead the concrete
Mix and knead the sculpting concrete according to the manufacturer’s instructions until it reaches the consistency you want.
Important: Always wear a protective mask and gloves. Be careful: the dry material can create fine dust and may contain glass-fibre components.
Work Quickly
Step 4 — Work quickly
The material needs to be processed quickly. Place or pour the freshly mixed concrete directly onto the plastic sheet.
Shape the Concrete
Step 5 — Shape the concrete
Shape the concrete as desired. Allow it to set or firm up for approximately 5–15 minutes, depending on the product and room temperature.
Add Impressions
Step 6 — Add impressions
Press screws, cans, bottle caps, pipes, or other suitable objects into the surface to create textures, patterns, or functional impressions.
Wait for Curing
Step 7 — Wait for curing
Allow the concrete to cure fully. Follow the curing time stated in the manufacturer’s instructions before removing the plastic or putting weight on the finished object :)
