D4E1 - Modular Mounting Surface for the Logitech Adaptive Gaming Kit and Optima Joystick
The D4E1 - Mounting Surface is a modular mounting system designed specifically for the Logitech Adaptive Gaming Kit and the Optima joystick. The system allows users to create a personalized gaming setup by combining multiple baseplates and placing different control holders exactly where they are needed.
This project was developed as a school project in collaboration with Dominiek Savio. The goal was to create a practical and adjustable mounting solution that improves the usability of adaptive gaming controls.
All parts of the system were designed from scratch. The final design consists of 3D-printable parts that can be printed and assembled by the user to create their own custom control layout.
Project Background
The Logitech Adaptive Gaming Kit and Optima joystick are designed to make gaming more accessible by allowing users to replace traditional controller inputs with separate buttons and joysticks. However, these separate components need a stable and comfortable way to be positioned.
The D4E1 Mounting Surface solves this by providing a modular platform where the Optima joystick and Logitech Adaptive Gaming Kit buttons can be securely placed, adjusted, and rearranged according to the user's preferences.
The system uses a puzzle baseplate design, allowing multiple baseplates to be connected together. Different holders can then be attached to the surface, creating a flexible setup that can be adapted for different users.
Collaboration and User Testing
This project was developed in collaboration with Dominiek Savio. During the development process, we visited Dominiek Savio to test our prototypes with people with physical disabilities who use adaptive technology.
These testing sessions allowed us to see how real users interacted with our design and helped us understand what improvements were needed. We received valuable feedback about the placement of the joystick, buttons, and the overall usability of the mounting system.
The goal of this project was not only to create a technical solution, but also to help make gaming more accessible and enjoyable. By creating a flexible mounting system for the Logitech Adaptive Gaming Kit and Optima joystick, we hope to help users create a setup that fits their own needs and allows them to experience the enjoyment of gaming again.
The feedback from these sessions influenced our final design choices, including the adjustable holders, modular baseplate system, and secure attachment methods.
Supplies
Materials
- PLA filament
All parts of the D4E1 Mounting Surface were printed using PLA filament. PLA was chosen because it is easy to print, strong enough for the application, and suitable for producing detailed mechanical parts.
- O-rings
The button holders use O-rings to create friction between the holder and the baseplate. This keeps the holders securely in place while still allowing them to be adjusted.
- Specifications:
- Type: DIN 3771 O-ring
- Size: 30 x 5 mm
- Material: NBR (Nitrile rubber)
- Anti-slip material
An anti-slip layer was glued to the bottom of the baseplate. This prevents the mounting surface from sliding during use and improves stability. we used a baking mat as the anti-slip material. Other materials with similar properties, such as rubber sheets or silicone anti-slip pads, can also be used.
- Glue/adhesive
Used to attach the anti-slip material to the bottom of the baseplate.
Tools and Equipment
- 3D printer (printed on bambulab P1S)
For the best print results, it is recommended to use a cool plate when printing the components. A PEI textured plate can also be used and provides good results.
- Slicing software (Bambu studio)
- Scissors or cutting tool
- Adhesive tools
Print the Components
Start by printing all required parts of the D4E1 Mounting Surface.
The required parts are:
- Baseplate(s)
- Joystick holder
- Small button holders
- Large button holder
- Trigger button holders
- Sliding attachments
- Wrist ramps
- Corner clamps
The parts can be printed using PLA filament with gyroid infill on 15% and 2 wall loops.
!!! For the clamp screw put the infill on 30% to make sure it doesn't crack when tightening.
!!! By placing the joystick slider at a 45° angle you need less supports and the part will be stronger.
!!! For the wrist ramps put the infill on 10% and enable top surface ironing for a perfectly smooth finish.
The number of parts needed depends on the preferred setup and the amount of controls that need to be mounted.

Add the Anti-Slip Layer
After printing the baseplate, prepare the anti-slip material.
For our prototype, we used a baking mat as the anti-slip layer, but other rubber or silicone anti-slip materials can also be used.
- Cut the anti-slip material to match the bottom surface of the baseplate.
- Apply tape/glue to the bottom of the baseplate.
- Place the anti-slip layer onto the glued surface.
- Press firmly and allow the glue to dry.
The anti-slip layer prevents the mounting surface from moving during use.
Prepare the Holders
Print the required button holders and prepare the O-rings.
For each button holder:
- Take a DIN 3771 30 x 5 mm NBR O-ring.
- Place the O-ring around the connection part of the button holder.
- Make sure the O-ring sits correctly in the groove.
The O-ring creates friction between the holder and the baseplate. This keeps the holder securely in place while still allowing it to be repositioned.
Install the Clamps
Print the corner clamps if extra mounting options are needed.
Attach the clamps to the corners of the baseplate. These can be used to secure the mounting surface to another object or provide additional stability.
Assemble the Gaming Setup
Place the holders onto the baseplate and arrange them according to your preferred layout.
The modular design allows you to:
- Move the joystick holder sideways
- Adjust the position of the small and large button holders
- Slide the trigger button holders using their attachment system
- Connect multiple baseplates together to create a larger surface
Place the Optima joystick and Logitech Adaptive Gaming Kit buttons into their holders.
Adjust the position of each component until the setup feels comfortable and natural to use.
Test the Setup
Before using the mounting surface, check that:
- All holders are securely attached.
- The controls do not move unintentionally.
- The joystick and buttons are positioned comfortably.
- The anti-slip layer keeps the baseplate stable.
The D4E1 Mounting Surface is now ready to use.
