DIY Eco-Friendly Flood Barrier
Living at the bottom of 3 hills on a main road can impose many dangers during floods. During large thunderstorms or rainstorms, all the water travels and rises right in front of my house. Although we have drains, they stop working as soon as they get clogged. I have designed a DIY eco-friendly door/garage barrier that can be easily reused or put outside before a storm. This flood barrier design reduces water damage inside your home, and it's very easy to construct. It consists of very few materials and it doesn't take much time. Since most pre-made floodgates are very expensive and use non-biodegradable plastics, this barrier consists of eco-friendly materials.
Supplies
- Pressured plywood (orange board)
- Natural Pressed Rubber (black board)
- Water-Based Caulks (light blue)
- Natural Air Dry Clay (red)
- Screws or Wooden Dowels (optional for additional support)
Measure/Cut Plywood
Cut the plywood to fit tightly inside your door's frame to the desired flood height (maximum 2-3 feet)
Attach the Foam
Attach small amounts of the Natural rubber to the side of the plywood that will face the wall.
Seal Gaps
Use caulk, and/or natural air dry clay to press into corners and edges where the concrete walls meet the board. You may use screws on the base for extra support.
