DIY Hammerschlagen (Stump) Game Stump and Stand
I was tired of hunting for stumps every time I wanted to play hammerschlagen with friends so I made my own stump! Here is an easy way to have a "stump" anytime you need it. The cost for the supplies was about $180 all in.
Supplies
- 8ft Rough cut railroad tie/ landscaping timber/ 6x6x8 anything that is not sanded
- Two 5/8in x24in threaded rods
- Four nuts and four washers for rod
- Circular, table, chain or any other kind of saw
- 3/4in x 17 Auger bit
- Cheap steel stool from thrift store
- 1/4in x 8in threaded rod with two nuts and washers.
Making the Stand
In this Instructable, I wanted to focus primarily on my "stump" but here is how I made my mobile stand so I could take my game anywhere. I got the stool from Goodwill for about $5.I already had a piece of diamond plate so I cut it to fit the top of the stool with an angle grinder. Then I attached the plate to the stool with some self-tapping screws and PL. I created the little spindle with a piece of threaded rod and some nuts/washers I had around. We have played tons of games on this stool and it works great.
Measure and Cut the Wood
Time to cut the 6x6x8s. I cut them into 24" sections. Super easy. You may have a little piece left over if your wood is actually 90inces.
Measure Where the Holes Will Be
Cool. Now you have three pieces at 24inches each. I marked it at 6in on center from both ends. This is where the rods will go. Really try to keep things level and square so your holes will match up and the rods will slide through easily.
Drill
Next you gotta drill the wood. I drilled one piece and then stacked it on the next one. Drilled down the first one to make the second. Removed the first and drilled out the second. I repeated the process one last time for the third.
Add the Rods, Washers and Nuts
Now its time to send the rods through your freshly cut holes. I stood the wood up vertically and pushed the rods through. I used my Hammerschlagen hammer to "persuade" the rods to go thought a little. Then I tightened on the washers and bolts. Almost done!
Drill a Hole in the Middle
Take your long auger bit and drill a hole in the center of your new stump so it can sit on the spindle. I also used a step bit to widen the hole a little to make it easier to install.
Done!
And that's it. You can play until one side is full of nails and then just flip it over for more fun.
Play!
Time to play! Grab some buddies and some beers and let the games begin.
