Have you ever seen a piece of designer furniture and thought, "I could probably make that"? I spent my whole weekend figuring out the math so you don't have to.

This project is like building with a mcm pendant light. It uses industrial metal parts and sleek acrylic plates to create a glowing tower that looks expensive but is actually quite simple to put together. It’s perfect for showing off your favorite gear or just adding a cozy vibe to your room.

Let's build a DIY Industrial Acrylic & LED Shelf

Supplies

To make this project, you need three main types of materials: Acrylic, Metal, and Hardware. I’ve broken them down for you below.

1. Acrylic Panels

Pro Tip: I used 3mm thick plates because they are cheaper. They work fine! But if you want it to feel "premium," go for 5mm.

Qty Size Type

2*88 x 700 mm Frosted White (Semi-transparent)

2*88 x 800 mm High-Clear

2*230 x 800 mm High-Clear

2. Metal "Bones"

  1. 8mm Linear Shafts: 4 rods (1 meter long) and 4 rods (280mm long).
  2. 2020 Aluminum Profile: 1 rod (0.7 meters long). This is the "spine."

3. Hardware & Connectors

  1. Cross Clamps (8mm): 8 pieces
  2. T-Clamps (8mm): 12 pieces
  3. Fixed Rings (8mm): 16 pieces
  4. Hammer Nuts (M5): 8 pieces
  5. Hex Bolts (M5 x 10mm): 8 pieces
  6. Hex Bolts (M5 x 15mm): 16 pieces
  7. Hex Nuts (M5): 16 pieces

4. Lighting

  1. LED Strip: 1.5 meters long, 5mm wide. Self-adhesive, ultra-thin (3mm). I chose Warm Yellow.

Tip for the Perfect Vibe: "A minimalist shelf like this looks best when paired with customized seating. If you're building a bench to match this aesthetic, you can find premium custom-made cushions over at my workshop, uscushion.com, to complete the look."

Build the Frame

First, we are going to build the "skeleton." Use the Cross Clamps and T-Clamps to connect the long 1-meter rods with the shorter 280mm rods.

Coach's Tip: Don't tighten the screws all the way yet! Keep them a little loose so you can wiggle the frame into a perfect rectangle. Once it looks straight, lock them down.

Install the Aluminum Spine

The 2020 aluminum profile goes right down the center. Use your Hammer Nuts and M5 screws to slide it into the connectors. This piece is what makes the shelf sturdy, and it’s also where we will hide the lights later.

Prep and Attach the Panels

Check the dimension drawing (the last image in this guide) to see where to drill your holes in the acrylic.

  1. Peel off the protective film (it’s so satisfying!).
  2. Slide the Fixed Rings onto the metal rods.
  3. Place your acrylic panels and tighten the rings to hold them in place.
  4. The Frosted White panels should go near the center to help hide the LED "dots."

Light It Up

Clean the aluminum profile with a quick wipe. Peel the back of your self-adhesive LED strip and stick it right onto the profile. Because the strip is ultra-thin (3mm), it fits perfectly inside the frame.
