Introduction

Beat the summer heat with this compact, eco-friendly, and ultra-portable DIY Mini Desktop Mist Cooler! Powered by a 5V USB interface, this project uses ultrasonic atomization transducers (mist makers) to convert water into a fine cool mist, providing instant relief at your workspace or study table. It’s an easy, low-cost project for makers, students, and hobbyists.

Supplies

Components and Materials:

  1. Ultrasonic Atomization Transducers / Mist Maker Modules (1.5–3 MHz piezo discs) – 2 pcs
  2. USB Mist Maker Driver Board (5V DC USB powered)
  3. Plastic / PVC Board / Acrylic Box (for water reservoir and housing)
  4. 5V Mini Cooling Fan (Optional, recommended for better airflow)
  5. USB Cable / Type-C Power Source
  6. Hot Glue / Waterproof Adhesive / Sealant
  7. Connecting Wires

Tools:

  1. Soldering Iron & Solder Wire
  2. Hot Glue Gun
  3. Wire Stripper
  4. Hobby Knife / Cutter

Design and Prepare the Reservoir Box

  1. Take a small waterproof plastic container or cut PVC/foam boards to create a customized box (Dimensions approx. 10cm x 10cm x 6cm).
  2. On the front wall of the box, mark two circular spots for the ultrasonic mist transducers.
  3. Carefully cut or drill holes matching the diameter of the transducers' silicone sealing rings.
  4. Ensure the box is leak-proof using waterproof sealant or hot glue along the inside edges.

Install the Ultrasonic Transducers

  1. Insert the ultrasonic piezo transducers into the rubber/silicone sealing rings to prevent water leakage.
  2. Push the transducers into the front holes of the box tightly.
  3. Apply hot glue around the back edges of the transducers on the inner side of the box to guarantee a 100% waterproof seal.

Wiring and Circuit Assembly

  1. Connect the red (positive) and black (negative) wires from each transducer to the output terminals on the USB Mist Maker Driver Board.
  2. If using two transducers, connect them according to the driver board's specifications (parallel output).
  3. Mount the driver board securely on the side of the box using hot glue, keeping the Micro-USB/Type-C power port accessible from the outside.
  4. (Optional) If adding a 5V fan, solder its wires to the 5V power input line so it turns on with the driver board.

Testing and Operation

  1. Fill the container with cold water (or add small ice cubes for an extra cooling effect).
  2. Make sure the water level touches the back of the mist transducers properly.
  3. Plug in a 5V USB cable (from a power bank, adapter, or PC USB port) to the driver board.
  4. Press the push-button on the board to start generating cool ultrasonic mist instantly!

Safety and Tips

  1. Water Leakage: Always test for leaks before connecting power. Keep electronics (driver board and USB port) dry.
  2. Optimal Cooling: Adding ice-cold water enhances the cooling sensation significantly.
  3. Cleaning: Regularly clean the water reservoir and transducers with fresh water to prevent mineral buildup.
