DIY Mug Planters WITH DRAINAGE / Creative Upcycled Reuse
I love the idea of turning unusable or chipped ceramic mugs into unique planters, but most DIY versions skip a critical step: drainage.
Without proper drainage, water collects at the bottom and can lead to root rot which inhibits plants from thriving long-term.
This tutorial shows how to transform old or chipped mugs into stylish, functional planters with proper drainage that supports healthy plant growth.
This is a simple, sustainable way to repurpose items you would otherwise discard while creating something practical for your garden or indoor space.
Supplies
- Chipped or unused ceramic mugs
- Diamond drill bit (for glass/ceramic use)
- Drill
- Water (for cooling while drilling—spray bottle works well)
- Potting soil
- Small plant or succulent clippings
- Safety glasses (recommended)
Select Mug
Not all mugs are ideal—avoid very thin or cracked mugs that may shatter during drilling.
Heavier ceramic mugs tend to work best.
Mark Drainage Spot
Flip the mug over and mark the center of the base. This is where the drainage hole will go.
Drill Drainage Hole (*most Important Step)
Using a diamond drill bit, slowly drill into the base of the mug. Keep the surface wet while drilling by regularly spraying with a spray bottle (this prevents overheating and cracking).
Go slow and apply light pressure. Let the drill do the work. Take your time here—rushing and overheating are the main causes of cracking.
Add Soil + Plant
Once drainage hole is complete, add well-draining potting soil mix (especially for succulents). Then add your plant clippings and irrigate.
Enjoy your new planter! These make lovely decor, thoughtful gifts or elegant centerpieces 🌿
