DIY Ocean Inspired Candles
The ocean is one of nature's most mesmerizing creations, covering more than seventy percent of our planet and sustaining an incredible diversity of life. From the gentle waves on the surface to the mysterious depths below, it is home to vibrant coral reefs, colorful marine creatures, delicate seashells, and hidden ecosystems that continue to inspire curiosity and wonder. Its soothing sound, endless blue horizon, and refreshing scent have long been associated with peace, relaxation, and adventure.
Inspired by the beauty and tranquility of the sea, this project transforms the essence of the ocean into handcrafted decorative candles. By combining crystal-clear gel wax, colored paraffin wax, and carefully selected decorative elements, each candle captures a different story of the underwater world. The addition of a fresh ocean-inspired fragrance further enhances the experience, evoking memories of cool sea breezes, sandy beaches, and peaceful moments by the shore.
The collection features two unique designs: the Ocean Depth Candle, illustrating the concept of an iceberg with its hidden beauty beneath the surface, and the Ocean Flora & Fauna Candle, showcasing a miniature underwater ecosystem filled with shells, corals, and marine-inspired decorations.
Let's make these beautiful candles together!
Supplies
- Gel wax - 250 Grams
- Paraffin or Soy Wax - 250 Grams
- Oil-based Blue Color powder
- Candle Wick
- Seashells and Pearls
- Glitter
- Small Sea stone and Pebbles
- Fragrance
- Glasses
- Tray for wax melting
Create the Ocean Floor
- Take a clean, transparent glass container that allows the internal decorations to remain clearly visible. Wash the glass thoroughly with warm water and mild soap to remove dust and dry it completely using a lint-free cloth.
- Begin by adding a layer of small white decorative stones at the bottom of the glass to resemble the sandy seabed. Arrange the stones evenly to form a stable base.
- Next, carefully place a few seashells of different sizes and orientations to create a natural underwater appearance. Add decorative pearls and colorful glass beads around the shells to represent marine treasures scattered across the ocean floor.
- Finally, sprinkle a small amount of fine glitter over the arrangement to mimic the shimmering effect of sunlight reflecting through water.
Prepare and Melt Gel Wax
- To create the illusion of crystal-clear ocean water, first pour a small amount of clear water into the glass container until it reaches approximately half the height of the glass.
- Next, cut the transparent gel wax into small, uniform pieces and place them in a heat-resistant melting jug or metal tray. Melt the wax slowly using a double boiler or a controlled electric heater. Allow the wax to melt gradually without rushing the process..
- Tips for Bubble-Free Gel Wax:
- Cut the gel wax into small pieces so it melts evenly.
- Heat slowly over low to medium heat (approximately 95–110°C).
- Do not boil or overheat the gel wax.
- Avoid vigorous stirring; let the wax melt naturally.
- Once fully melted, allow the wax to rest for 2–3 minutes before pouring so any trapped air bubbles can rise to the surface.
- Pour the wax slowly in a thin, continuous stream along the inner wall of the glass to minimize the formation of new bubbles.
- Add a small amount of blue candle dye to the melted wax and stir gently until the color is evenly distributed throughout the wax.
Pouring Gel Wax
- Once the gel wax has completely melted and the blue color is evenly mixed, carefully pour it into the prepared glass container. Pour the wax slowly in a thin, steady stream.
- Immediately after pouring, insert the candle wick into the center of the container. Use a wick holder, clothespin, or two wooden sticks placed across the rim of the glass to keep the wick centered while the wax solidifies.
- Allow the candle to rest undisturbed at room temperature for 1–2 hours, or until the gel wax has completely hardened. Avoid moving or shaking the container during this time.
With the Ocean Flora & Fauna candle now complete, we can move on to creating the second design—the Ocean Depth (Iceberg) candle.
Prepare Iceberg in Gelwax
- Begin by placing a cotton candle wick at the center of a clean, transparent glass container. Secure the wick to the bottom using a wick sticker.
- Prepare the transparent gel wax as described in the previous section. Slowly pour the melted gel wax into the glass until it reaches approximately half the height of the container. Leave the candle undisturbed for 1–2 hours, allowing the gel wax to partially solidify until it becomes firm but is still easy to carve.
- After the gel wax has partially set, use a clean craft knife or sculpting tool to carefully carve away the gel wax from the center of the candle. Gradually remove wax to create an irregular, tapered cavity that extends downward into the gel, resembling the hidden portion of an iceberg beneath the ocean surface. Vary the depth and angles of the cuts to achieve a natural appearance, as real icebergs have uneven and rugged underwater formations.
Pour Praffine Wax
- Melt paraffin wax or soy wax in a separate melting container and add a small amount of blue candle dye. Mix gently until the color is uniform. Once the wax has completely melted, slowly pour it over the partially carved gel wax layer until it forms a 2–3 cm thick layer above the gel.
- As the liquid wax is poured, it naturally flows into the carved cavity within the gel wax. This creates the appearance of an iceberg extending deep beneath the ocean surface.
- After pouring, leave the candle undisturbed for 1–2 hours to allow the paraffin (or soy) wax to cool and solidify completely.
- Once fully set, the layered candle will clearly depict the visible ocean surface with the hidden iceberg structure beneath it.
Once the top wax layer has partially set, carefully place decorative crystals and seashells on the surface to enhance the ocean-inspired appearance.
Final Look!
The ocean has a way of slowing us down. The sound of its waves, the fresh scent of the sea, and the beauty hidden beneath its surface remind us to pause, breathe, and appreciate nature's quiet wonders. These candles were created with that same feeling in mind—not just to illuminate a room, but to bring a small piece of the ocean into everyday life.
From the colorful marine life resting on the ocean floor to the silent strength of an iceberg concealed beneath the water, each candle tells its own story. The transparent gel wax captures the depth and clarity of the sea, while the soft ocean-inspired fragrance fills the space with a sense of calm and relaxation. Whether placed in a cozy corner, gifted to someone special, or lit after a long day, these handcrafted candles create a peaceful atmosphere that gently reminds us of the beauty, mystery, and tranquility of the ocean.
