Easter Soldering Workshop: a Study Timer!
Hello Everyone! Welcome to the IEEE Soldering Event!
Today, we are building an Easter Egg Circuit that has a timer feature and an arcade game after some heavy studying!
Shout out to W. Chayne Bowmer, who designed the PCB, programmed it, and made this workshop possible. This tutorial was written by Dennis Chang Seng Chon.
Supplies
Material:
- A soldering kit in a ziplock bag
- 12 LEDS (Choose your Color!)
- An Attiny (Ask for assistance after assembling the kit)
- Batteries (Ask for assistance after assembling the kit)
Equipment:
- A Soldeirng Iron
- Solder
- Safety Goggles
- A Cutter
Downloads
IC Socket
The IC socket holds the Attiny chip and protects it from heat while soldering.
Make sure the back of the board is facing you, the side printed with “Happy Easter.”
- Find the notch on the socket.
- Match it to the notch on the PCB.
- Place the socket into the board.
Flip to the other side
- Solder one corner pin first.
- Check that it sits flat and straight.
- Solder the rest of the pins.
Make sure there are no solder bridges between pins.
Resistors
Make sure the back of the board is facing you, the side printed with “Happy Easter.”
Use the four resistors in the bag.
- Bend the legs of each resistor.
- Insert them into the correct holes on the board.
Flip to the other side
- Bend the legs outward on the back to hold them in place temporarily.
- Solder one side first, then solder the other side.
- Clip the extra wire with a cutter.
Repeat the steps above for 4 resistors
Push Button
Make sure the back of the board is facing you, the side printed with “Happy Easter.”
- Place the push button into the correct spot on the board.
- Make sure it sits flat against the PCB.
Flip to the other side
- Hold it in place and solder one pin first.
- Check that it is straight.
- Solder the remaining pins.
Switch (Toggle)
Make sure the back of the board is facing you, the side printed with “Happy Easter.”
- Place the toggle switch into the correct spot on the board.
- Make sure it sits flat against the PCB.
Flip to the other side
- Solder one pin first.
- Check that it is straight.
- Solder the remaining pins.
Buzzer
Make sure the back of the board is facing you, the side printed with “Happy Easter.”
- Place the buzzer into the correct spot on the board.
- Make sure it sits flat against the board.
Flip to the other side
- Solder one pin first.
- Check that it is straight.
- Solder the remaining pin.
- Clip the extra wire with a cutter.
Battery Holder
Make sure the back of the board is facing you, the side printed with “Happy Easter.”
- Place the battery holder into the correct spot on the board.
- Do not insert the batteries.
- Make sure it sits flat against the PCB.
Flip to the other side
- Solder one pin first.
- Check that it is straight.
- Solder the remaining pins.
12 LEDs
Flip to the front side (with the Easter Egg pattern facing up)
- Place one LED into the correct holes.
- Match the polarity:
- Longer leg = positive (see picture)
- Shorter leg = negative (see picture)
Flip to the other side
- Bend the legs slightly on the back to hold it in place.
- Solder the legs.
- Clip the extra wire with a cutter.
Repeat 12 times for all LEDS
Have Fun!!!
Ask a volunteer for the Attiny and batteries.
Use this timer for studying, cooking, and more! You can find the instructions on the back of the board.
