Eco-Ergonomics: Turning Amazon Trash Into a Laptop Stand
I have a super-slim laptop powered by an Intel i7-13700H processor. While multitasking, it generates an enormous amount of heat directly from the bottom.
To make matters worse, my desk is made of old wood (roughly 15 years old) that is susceptible to catching fire if I'm careless. It also suffered a severe termite attack just three weeks ago. The cardboard packaging from my Amazon parcel was just waste material until I decided to reuse it to build a stand for my 1.35 kg (2.98 lbs) laptop.
I finally finished building my custom cardboard laptop stand! It provides two major benefits:
- Better Ergonomics: It keeps my posture upright and straight, preventing back strain during long work sessions.
- Heat Dissipation: It protects my wooden table by allowing trapped heat from the laptop to escape quickly.
Supplies
Required Materials:
- Cardboard (either use a thicker one ~ 0.5 inches or glue two pieces together)
- Scissors
- A tape measure or ruler (for measuring)
- A pen (for marking dimensions on the cardboard)
Handpick a Suitable Cardboard Box
I had more than five cardboard boxes. I measured them, picked the largest one, and cut it open flat.
Examine the Bottom of the Laptop and Record Its Dimensions.
My laptop has three bumps on the bottom. Using a tape measure, I measured diagonally from the right edge of the lower-left bump to the right edge of the upper bump. The length was 11 inches, which I named L1.
Elevate the Laptop
I elevated the laptop using books to create an angle, allowing me to measure the clearance between the laptop and the table surface. The height came out to 4 inches.
I named this measurement L2.
Sketch the Dimensions on Cardboard
- L1: 11 inches
- L2: 4 inches
- L3: 1.5 inches
- L4: 1 inch
- L5: 1 inch
I sketched these dimensions onto the cardboard, marking a length of 11 inches and a total height of 5 inches (calculated as L2 + 1 inch).
Cut Cut Cut
I cut two identical cardboard pieces using my measurements.
Cut a Vertical Slot in the Middle
I cut a 1/4-inch-wide vertical slot into both cardboard pieces. These slots are located at the 5.5-inch mark, exactly halfway along the length of the cardboard.
Then, I interlocked the two pieces together at the slots to form the stand.
The Stand Is Ready
It really is as simple as that. This minimal, portable design cost me nothing except 20 minutes of my time.
