Draw your design onto your hat lightly with the pen or pencil.

Get Your Tools of Creation

Choose your thread and get the needle.

Snip Smart, Not Hard

IMG_9062 (2).jpeg

Measure amount of string needed.

**Note: cut with almost double the amount needed.

The "Don't Let It Slip Away" Step

IMG_9069 (1).jpeg

Thread the string into the needle. Tie a knot at bottom of the string.

Breaking the Surface

IMG_9071 (1).jpeg

Choose a starting point on the design and peirce the needle from the underside of the hat (where you can't see it)

Follow Through (literally)

IMG_9072 (1).jpeg

Pull the thread all the way through until the knot rests against the fabric of the hat.

No Going Back Now!

IMG_9073 (1).jpeg

Push the needle back down about 1/4 inch from the first hole, following your design.

**Note: Pull the thread tight enough so it lays flat, not bunching up.

You Got to Lock In!

Come back up for your next stich and push the needle back down your previous hole then go twice as far the next time you come up (from the underside) so that the stiches appear as a line. Repeat these steps, alternating sides of the hat, creating a running stitch along your design.

Almost Done!

IMG_9120 (1).jpeg

Continue stitching until you reach the end of the basic design.

Lock It In

IMG_9125 (1).jpeg

After you finish, tie a knot by looping the thread through the fabric and pulling snugly, repeat 2-3 times for safety. Cut the extra string

This Is Where It Gets Fancy...

Reflection!

Doing this craft was a really entertaining and honestly, relaxing. I've done lots of embroidery and have enjoyed every bit of it. I have also learned lots of things along the way, and of course have lots more to learn! And, obviously, I will share my wisdom with you. When you are doing this project, make sure to keep the stitches even and around the same size all along. It will look nicer. If you are finding that you are getting lots of unnecessary knots, you probably have too long of thread. The shorter the better. Be creative! Don't be afraid to try new things and explore out of your comfort zone!

Something that I would do differently next time I do this, is to keep it more organized. The underside of the hat is really scrambled and I would love to learn how to have more of an order. But the more you progress in your embroidery skills you would know how to have all sides are tidy.

Something I learned is that something doesn't have to be perfect inside and out to be beautiful. I feel as though that can also connect to our lives. You don't have to be perfect all the time to still be a amazing person. Sometimes we see a person that looks so perfect from the outside but we don't know even the half of how scrambled they can be inside. I think we should remember that. :)

I hope you had as much fun with this craft as I did! Enjoy your hat!
