Elegant Domino Clock
My Clock design is a simplified version of the Domino Wall Clock by Carbon Design Group.
I have made it smaller to put it on a table or in a shelf and simplified the mechanism that shows the time.
Instead of using electronic magnetic coil motors to reveal the white dots; what is if not complicated is tedious and a bit expensive, mine uses WS2812B 5050 Addressable SMD smart RGB Leds(Neopixels) to show the time.
Supplies
1 x Arduino Nano.
1 x RTC I2C DS1307 AT24C32.
42 x WS2812B 5050 Addressable RGB Leds.
3mm MDF Board.
3mm White Acrylic Board.
3mm Grey Translucent Smoke Acrylic Board.
Overview
This clock consists of 3 domino tiles on a base.
Each domino tile is made of PLA, MDF, and acrylic. The bases are also made of MDF.
Domino
Here is the order for setting up each domino tile.
The 4 MDF parts are attached from the back to the 3D-printed part
Bases
The MDF bases have holes and a conduct for passing the cables through.
Paint
Now is the time to paint the MDF pieces.
Glue the Acrylics
Now you need to stick the white acrylic circles to layer 3 of the MDF.(Photo 1)
And the translucent acrylic on layers 1 and 2 of MDF. (Photo 2)
Neopixels
To start, we need to pre-solder each Neopixel. (Photo 1)
We will number each acrylic disc. And let's glue the Neopixels to each acrylic disc in the correct orientation.(Photo 2)
Now it's time to solder the Neopixels.(Photo 3)
Overview with all Neopixels connected.(Photo4)
Electronics
The RTC module is connected to the SDA and SCL pins on the Arduino.
Hours Domino Signal is connected to pin D7 on arduino.
Ten Minutes Domino is connected to pin D8 on arduino.
Units Minutes is connected to pin 9 on arduino.
Then we must provide the 5 volts directly from the source.
(Photos 1-2)
Assembly
We need to assemble them as shown in Photo 1.
Layer 4 is different in UNITS MINUTES domino. It has a hole for the power supply cable. (Photo 2)
Now attach the three domino pieces to the base, making sure to align the holes for the cables. (Photo 3)
Options
There are some ways to display the same number.(Photo 1)
IF you want a specific one you have to modify the code. See how is done on my Code, then make your own.
The colors of each Domino can be customized by easy coding. (Photo 2-4)
We have to get the date from the computer for the RTC Module, by uncomment (delete "//") on code line 43.
Once it´s done and uploaded, comment again the line 43 (by adding "//" to the line)and
upload again the code (Photo 4)
