With just a few steps and affortable materials we can turn used cooking oil into a calming, eco-friendly aromatherapy candles. This is a guide on how to purify used oil, blend it with stearic acid and essential oils, and create beautiful aromatherapy candles. Let's turn waste into calmness!

Supplies

Basic Ingredients (Per 1 Candle – ~100–120 g):

  1. Used cooking oil (70–80g)
  2. Stearic acid (20–30g)

Recommended ratio: 70% oil : 30% stearic acid (good balance of softness & structure)]

  1. Candle wick with base (Cotton wick highly recommended)
  2. Wick Holder/Clothespin
  3. Essential oil (5–10 drops or ~8% of oil weight)
  4. Candle dye / crayon / oil pastel (optional)
  5. Heat-resistant container (jar, tin, etc.) (120-150 mL)

Tools:

  1. Stirring rod
  2. Heat source (hot plate)
  3. Cooking pot
  4. Filter paper/cloth
  5. Charcoal (~1–2g per 100mL oil)
  6. Thermometer (optional)

Purification of Used Cooking Oil

  1. Filter the used cooking oil using cloth or filter paper.
  2. Add a small amount of charcoal (≈1–2 g per 100 mL oil), stir for 10–15 minutes.
  3. Filter again (immediately) to remove charcoal.
  4. Heat gently to remove any remaining water.

💡 Tip: The oil should look clearer and smell neutral before moving on.

Preparing the Candle Mixture

  1. Place purified used cooking oil into a cooking pot.
  2. Heat gently until melted (~60–70°C). (Using thermometer if available)
  3. Add stearic acid until melted.
  4. Stir until fully mixed. Keep the heat gentle and avoid boiling.

Adding Fragrance & Color

  1. Remove from heat and let cool until the mixture turns slightly cloudy (this helps bind the scent).
  2. Add: Essential oil (5–10 drops), Dye (optional)
  3. Stir gently and evenly. (Avoid whipping air in the mixture)

Pouring the Candle

  1. Secure the wick in the center of the container.
  2. Pour the liquid mixture carefully.
  3. Leave undisturbed until solid (≈1–2 hours)

Final Check

✂️ Cut the wick about 1 cm remaining for an even, smoke-free burn.

🔥 Test burn for a short period to check flame stability and fragrance smell.
