Floating 3D Metal Charizard Art From Recycled Foil Containers
Turn a simple disposable foil food container into a striking piece of floating metal artwork! In this project, I'll show you how I transformed a recycled foil tray into a 3-D embossed Charizard sculpture using basic crafting tools.
The concept behind this project was to create metal art that appears to float rather than sit on a solid background. While I initially planned to mount the finished piece on a black backing board for a gallery style presentation, I ultimately displayed it inside a frame without a backing. The result is a floating metal Charizard that appears to soar through whatever background is behind it.
This technique can be used for Pokémon, fantasy creatures, animals, logos, or any design with bold shapes and interesting contours.
Supplies
- Aluminum foil food container/tray
- Double-sided foam tape (the thicker, the better)
- Paper for the template
- Foam sheets (multiple layers)
- Scissors
- Marker or pen
- Pencil
- Pottery carving tools
- Wooden sculpting tools
- Metal Ball stylus or rounded embossing tool
- Cloth or soft rag
Prepare the Foil Sheet
Start with a disposable foil food container.
Using scissors, trim away the raised sides and edges until only the flat bottom remains. The surface will still contain some shallow dents and texture from the original container shape.
Place several foam sheets on your work surface. Position the foil sheet on top and cover it with a cloth. Using your hands, gently press and smooth the foil until you create the flattest surface possible.
The smoother the foil is at this stage, the cleaner your final embossing will look.
Create Your Design
Draw or print an outline of the design you want to emboss on a plain paper.
For this project, I chose Charizard because the design contains a variety of interesting forms:
Large wings
Curving body shapes
Flowing fire elements
Dynamic movement
These features make it perfect for experimenting with different depths and raised surfaces. I plan to make a Pokemon Series in the future. It is such a fun activity.
Tape or hold the drawing in place over the foil.
Transfer the Outline
Place multiple foam sheets beneath the foil.
This is an important step the thicker the foam stack, the deeper you can press into the metal to create smooth curves and dramatic raised areas.
Using a pencil or engraving tool, firmly trace the entire outline of the design. Press hard enough to leave visible indented lines in the foil.
Once finished, remove the paper template to reveal the transferred design.
Begin Shaping the 3D Forms
Using a ball stylus, rounded embossing tool, or any smooth rounded sculpting tool, begin creating the larger raised sections.
Work from the back side of the foil and gradually build volume.
A useful approach is to:-
- Create the deepest bulges first.
- Smooth them gradually using circular motions.
- Move to medium-height areas.
- Finish with the shallower raised details and redo the sharper lines.
Working in stages helps create smooth transitions and natural-looking curves.
Add Fine Details
Once the major forms are complete, flip the piece over.
Using fine engraving tools, carving tools, or pointed sculpting tools, add the smaller details from the front side.
This is where features such as Wing structure, Facial details, Scale lines, Fire swirls, Muscle definition, Nails, Eyes etc can be refined and sharpened.
The contrast between the raised forms and engraved details is what gives the finished piece its dimensional appearance.
Trim Away the Excess Foil
Carefully cut away the unwanted foil surrounding the design.
Take your time around delicate areas such as wing tips, claws, and flame details.
Once the excess material is removed, the remaining foil becomes much easier to shape and tends to hold curves more effectively.
Refine the Embossing
After trimming, revisit the sculpture with your ball stylus and shaping tools.
Because the surrounding foil has been removed, you'll find that the metal responds much better to additional shaping.
Use this stage to Deepen curves, Smooth transitions and Correct uneven areas to Enhance highlights and shadows.
This final refinement step dramatically improves the overall appearance.
Create the Floating Effect
Apply thick double-sided foam tape to the deepest areas on the back of the sculpture.
The foam tape serves two purposes:
- It provides support for the raised sections.
- It creates separation from the mounting surface, enhancing the 3D effect.
You can mount the artwork on Black cardstock, Painted wood, Canvas, Acrylic sheet or any Picture frame backing.
Display Your Floating Metal Art
My original plan was to mount the Charizard on a black background to create a museum-style display.
However, after experimenting, I discovered that mounting it inside a frame without any backing created a much more dramatic result. The metal artwork appears to float inside the frame, and whatever background is visible behind it becomes part of the display.
The effect makes the Charizard feel as though it is flying through space, giving the piece a lightweight and dynamic appearance despite being made from metal.
Final Thoughts
This project is a great way to recycle foil containers while exploring metal embossing techniques without specialized equipment. With nothing more than simple sculpting tools and a bit of patience, you can create surprisingly detailed metal artwork that looks far more complex than the materials suggest.
It is an amazing activity for kids and adults alike. Try experimenting with different Pokémon, dragons, animals, or fantasy creatures to create your own floating metal sculptures.

Take extra care when cutting and handling the metal.
