Frozen Indoor Play Castle

F50R5M7MVK58N61.jpg

The objective was to make a Frozen castle:

  1. It is approximately 4' high x 3.5' width and depth
  2. It can be disassembled for storage, but can be screwed permanently (Back panel, side panels, towers, drawbridge and arch entrance)
  3. Initially, it included flowers, rhinestones, LED lights with remote control, kitchen, infinity mirrors in the towers, etc.
  4. Later additions included the stool, water faucet next to the kitchen, chains for drawbridge, mp3 card to play trumpets, blackboard for menu
  5. You can find plenty of tutorials online on how to draw gothic arches, making an infinity mirror, etc
  6. Below are the dimensions I used, but feel free to use your own. Measure twice. Cut once

Supplies

Materials

  1. Plywood 4' x 8' x 0.5"
  2. Plywood 4' x 8' x 0.25"
  3. Baseboard
  4. Plastic rhinestones, and snowflake stickers
  5. LED lights, and remote control (wireless RGB LED light strip remote controller)
  6. Wood filler and paint
  7. Clear glass/plexiglass and one-way mirror film\
  8. Small mirrors
  9. Hinges
  10. Chain
  11. MP3 module (16MB Push Button Activated Sound Module with Speaker, Type-C Cable, and Easy Recording Capability)
  12. Blackboard
  13. Others added for decoration (flowers, plastic mirrors, tassel, wind chime, etc. Have fun)

For each tower, you will need 7 panels for the sides (1/2") and two for the top/bottom (1/4")

  1. A- 3 @ 4' x 2" . Rip on both sides at 22.5°
  2. B- 2 @ 4' x 9.5" . Rip on both sides at 22.5°
  3. C- 1 @ 4' x 1" . Rip on one side at 22.5° and the other a straight cut
  4. D- 1 @ 4' x 3" . Rip on one side at 22.5° and the other a straight cut
  5. E- 2 @ 12" x 12" - Cut the corners to match the tower dimensions

Windows (panel B). Front and side on each tower

  1. 18" from the bottom. 20" H x 6" W
  2. Add a windowsill using 0.25" plywood. Add Moulding underneath windowsill

For the Infinity mirror (B). Front of each tower

  1. Drill a hole (3")
  2. Glue a mirror on the back. Glue LED lights to the inside of the hole, and run the cable to the top
  3. Glue clear glass/plexiglass with one-way mirror film or window tint to the front
  4. Decorate around mirror

Top and bottom trims

  1. For the bottom I used standard baseboard. Cut/nail/glue to wrap around castle
  2. For the top I used two strips 2.5" wide, 0.25" thick, offset from each other.
  3. One side on each ripped at 45°
  4. First strip: Align to the top of the castle and glue/nail
  5. Second strip: Create the embattlement by cutting notches. The easiest way is to create a jig and use a Dremel to cut. Offset the strip 1.5" higher over the first one and glue/nail

For each side, cut a panel 4' high x 30.5"

Added the beginning of a column on the back, to mirror the front columns. All 4' high

  1. F- 1 @ 2.5" - Rip one side at 45°, and one at 22.5°
  2. G- 1 @ 4.5" - Rip one side at 22.5°
  3. H- 1 @ 1.75" - Fill the gap in the back 1.75" ~Rip one side at 45°

Added a window 20" H x 16" W, and drilled 3 holes @ 3" (just to minimize plain space)

Added a planter on each side 16" W x 3" H x 2.5" D (top) x 2" D (bottom)

At a later time I added a kitchen, on one of the side walls (foldable for storage), using 1/2" plywood and adding some downloaded images, painting and applying Polycrylic for durability. Measures: 20" W x 6" D

Added baseboard and trims on top on the outside, and baseboard and one layer of top trim on the inside

On the corners of the back towers, added .025" pieces of plywood to mimic exposed stones protruding from the tower

Building the Back

IMG_6321.JPG

Cut a panel using 1/2" plywood 4' x 38"

Added baseboard and top trim on the inside, and just embattlement on the outside, since the back would not be visible. Make sure to account for the joints to other panels

Added a Frozen sticker, but you could tailor to your kids interests.

  1. Lintel: It is 18" wide, to slide in between the towers.
  2. Drawbridge: It is 18" wide, connected with carriage bolts to the tower so it can be raised
  3. Crown on top of towers
  4. Night sky: Used battery fiber optic wands, drilled holes in the front, and fed fiber optic from the back, securing with glue

  1. Use a Forstner bit to create shallow holes to insert/glue the rhinestones, and prevent them from coming off.
  2. Paint your project
  3. Add rhinestones
  4. Affix some self adhesive snowflakes
  5. Run LED lights
  6. Add plants
