Fun Eco-Coaster

20260923_093414.jpg

The Eco-Coaster is a multi-level, interactive marble run and maze constructed entirely from upcycled household waste and basic crafting supplies. Using standard cardboard paper towel and toilet paper tubes, an old cardboard box lid, and leftover construction paper, I built a series of interconnected support towers, entry portals, and U-shaped track runways. The entire structure is reinforced and styled using colorful bands of duct tape to add structural rigidity and a vibrant, color-blocked aesthetic before being glued inside a paper-lined tray. When marbles are dropped into the top portals, gravity guides them down and through vertical drop tubes to finish at the base. Why I Made It is to show how common materials—like empty cardboard tubes and box lids—can come from the recycling bin and be transformed into a hands-on toy. I wanted to design an eco-friendly project that combines my love of creativity and racing. By decorating the raw cardboard skeleton with colorful duct tape, this project turns everyday scrap into a marble run that encourages play and shows how easy it is to craft functional entertainment out of trash.

Supplies

Crafting Materials

  1. Cardboard tubes: 8 paper towel or toilet paper rolls
  2. Shallow cardboard box: 1 open cardboard tray or box lid
  3. Construction paper: 3 sheets of green paper
  4. Marbles: 2 small glass marbles (one white, one blue)

Adhesives & Tape

  1. Hot glue gun: 1 cordless, bright green/yellow glue gun
  2. Colored duct tape: 5 rolls of tape in dark green, light green, pink, yellow, and blue

Tools

  1. Scissors: 1 pair of black-handled scissors
  2. Craft knife: 1 slim precision blade/utility knife

Gather Materials & Prepare the Base

  1. Gather all the tools and crafting materials from your supplies list.
  2. Line the base: Use the hot glue gun to attach the green construction paper to the inside of the shallow cardboard box lid. Cut the paper to fit tightly so it forms a smooth, clean surface for the bottom of the maze.

Build the Main Support Towers

  1. Connect the tubes: Line up your cardboard tubes end-to-end to reach your desired tower heights, and bond the seams together with a clean bead of hot glue completely around the joint.
  2. Let it cure: Hold the tubes steady for a few seconds until the glue sets so the pillars stay perfectly straight.

Cut the Runways and Entry Portals

  1. Slice the ramps: Cut your remaining cardboard tubes completely in half lengthwise using a craft knife or scissors to create open, U-shaped runways.
  2. Measure and trim: Hold the runways up against your standing towers to test the spacing, and trim them to your preferred lengths.
  3. Carve the entry holes: Use a precision craft knife to cut circular drop holes and diagonal slots into the towers wherever a runway needs to pass through or drop a marble.

Glue the Tracks Together

  1. Attach the ramps: Guide the ends of your U-shaped runways into the cut portals on the towers, fixing them at a downward angle using hot glue.
  2. Complete the skeleton: Ensure all tubes and runways are fully interconnected with glue so the entire track stands as a single, raw cardboard unit.

Reinforce and Decorate With Duct Tape

  1. Wrap the joints: Wrap bands of colored duct tape around each glued tube seam and right underneath the runway connections to add critical structural support.
  2. Strengthen the pillars: Add more layers of colored tape up and down the towers to make them rigid and strong.
  3. Add style: Use your five different tape colors to hide raw edges and create vibrant, eye-catching color blocks across the entire maze.

Anchor the Track to the Base

Step 6: Anchor the Track to the Base

  1. Position the maze: Pick up your fully taped, interconnected structure and place it inside your green-lined tray to find the perfect final placement.
  2. Glue it down: Apply a heavy ring of hot glue around the bottom rim of each vertical tower and press the entire structure firmly down onto the green paper base until secure.
