Glow in the Dark Jewelry
I enjoy making jewelry and wanted something unique. I had never seen jewelry that glowed in the dark. I used resin because it is a something I had tried before. I thought it would be a fun project. The jewelry is recharged by exposing it to light, either sunlight or artificial.
Getting Started
Gather all resin supplies and find a spot with lots of ventilation. I worked outside because the resin odors are toxic in the liquid form. Use a mask, apron, safety goggles and gloves to protect your body. Since this is a jewelry project, I used the epoxy resin for making the crystal pendant and the earrings.
Mixing the Epoxy Resin
Follow the manufacturer’s instruction by mixing the epoxy resin parts A and B. Add the glow in the dark powder pigment and mix slowly in the resin cup. If there are bubbles, add warm water.
Filling the Resin Molds
Pour the epoxy resin into the bracelet mold, trying not to add bubbles. Use the syringe to fill the crystal mold with epoxy resin. Use a toothpick to remove any bubbles. Leave the molds in the well ventilated area, I worked outside, for 24-48 hours to harden. Cover the molds to prevent any dust or dirt from soiling the items in the molds.
Making the Jewelry Pieces
Work in a well ventilated area inside with the UV resin to make the beads for the necklace. Mix the glow in the dark powder with the UV resin. Use the syringe to fill the bead molds, making sure not to over fill and block the holes. Remove air bubbles using the toothpicks. Repeat the process until you have the number of beads for the desired length. For the small accent gems on the bracelet and ring, repeat the process for the beads.
Finishing the Resin Jewelry
After the beads, gems, ring, and the bracelet have gotten hard, put in them under the UV light for 2-4 minutes to cure the resin.
Putting the Jewelry Together
After the UV resin is cured, use the waterproof abrasive paper to smooth the resin surfaces. Use tweezers to place the small gems on the bracelet and ring. Using UV resin as an adhesive, hold bracelet and ring under the UV light for 2-4 minutes.
Polishing the Jewelry
After the resin is cured, use the Flitz polish to make the resin smooth and shiny. Remove excess polish with warm soapy water. Pat the items dry with a cloth.
Assembling the Necklace
To assemble the jewelry pieces, use the chain nose pliers to attach the small and large jump rings to the diamond shaped resin form to the lever back. Cut the beading to 20”. Then, thread the beading wire through the crimping bead and the spring ring hole. Next, create a loop by putting the end of the wire in the crimping bead. Use super glue to hold it in place. Cut any excess wire using the wire cutters. If the wire end is sharp, smooth it with a file. Thread the beads through the wire, placing the pendent with the jump ring in the middle of the necklace. Repeat the steps for the crimping wire, substituting a jump ring for a spring ring.
