In this project, I will guide you through the process of creating a custom rainbow-themed resin pen from scratch. Crafting with resin is always full of surprises; sometimes the texture out of the mold isn't perfect, but with a little creativity and acrylic paint, you can turn any flaw into a premium, texturized artistic masterpiece. Let's get started!

Supplies

Clear art resin and hardener, silicone pen mold, ballpoint pen refill, mixing cup, wooden stirrer, various shades of acrylic paint, gold, silver, and rose gold foil flakes.

Gathering the Materials

To begin, gather all your crafting supplies on a clean workspace. You will need clear art resin and hardener, a silicone pen mold, a ballpoint pen refill, a mixing cup, a wooden stirrer, various shades of acrylic paint, and gold, silver, and rose gold foil flakes.

Mixing the Resin and Hardener

Carefully measure the art resin and hardener according to the instructions. Mix them slowly in a clean cup using a wooden stirrer to prevent air bubbles from forming.

Pouring the Vibrant Rainbow Base

Now, begin pouring the colored resin into the silicone pen mold. Start with the green shade, carefully guiding it into the mold sections to create the vibrant base layers for our rainbow pattern.

Layering All Rainbow Colors in the Mold

Carefully layer and arrange all the remaining rainbow colors inside the resin mold. Ensure the colors flow nicely into each other and fill the mold completely, establishing the full spectrum design.

Pouring the First Layer of Clear Resin

After setting up the rainbow color spectrum in the mold, gently pour a thin layer of clear resin mixture over them. This helps bind the colorful base and prepares the mold for inserting the pen refill.

Measuring and Preparing the Refill

Take the blue ballpoint pen refill and align it next to the mold. It is important to measure and ensure that the tip is perfectly positioned so the final pen remains completely functional.

Inserting the Refill Into the Mold

Carefully slide the pen refill down into the center of the silicone mold. Push it gently until it sits securely right into the middle of the color layers, ensuring it stays stable.

Pouring Clear Resin to Seal the Refill

Once the refill is in place, slowly pour another layer of clear resin from the cup into the silicone mold. This will fully cover and seal the pen refill inside the rainbow base.

Checking the Placement and Aligning the Mold

Carefully inspect the mold from all angles to ensure the refill stays perfectly centered. Make sure the colors look aligned and there are no large air bubbles trapped inside.

Adding Shimmering Foil Flakes to the Top

Use a wooden stirrer to gently pick up beautiful gold and rose gold foil flakes from the mixing cup. Lightly place and spread them along the top layer of the resin to give the pen a premium, glittering effect.

Securing the Elements Before Curing

Double-check that all the artistic elements—the rainbow colors, the central refill, and the glittering foil flakes—are perfectly locked into place. The mold is now fully prepared to sit and cure.

Leaving the Resin Mold to Cure Completely

Place the filled silicone mold on a flat, even surface away from dust. Leave it undisturbed for 24 to 48 hours to allow the art resin to cure completely and harden into a solid custom pen.

First Demolding and Checking the Flaws

After the resin dried, the pen was pulled out of the mold for the first time. The upper layer did not cure perfectly, leaving an uneven and rough texture on the surface that needed extra work.

Fixing and Decorating the Surface

To correct the flaws, the surface was carefully decorated and smoothed out. Adding a fresh top coat along with neatly placed gold and silver foil flakes helped fix the ruined parts, making it look vibrant and beautiful.

The Final Perfect Demolding

Once the final touch-ups cured completely, the pen was safely removed from the silicone mold once again. This time, all the rainbow colors and golden flakes came out looking smooth, even, and completely fixed.

Testing the Finished Custom Rainbow Pen

The handmade resin rainbow pen is now fully complete and ready to use. Testing it on a piece of paper confirms that the inner refill functions perfectly, matching the premium look of the exterior craft.
