Homemade square knot bracelets are easy and fun to make. They are perfect for friendship bracelets, partner bracelets, or special events. Although bracelets like these can be found in many stores, they are often handmade by street vendors in Mexico, where this style of bracelet is very popular. Many vendors create and sell them outside markets as a way to make a living.

By following these simple steps, you can learn how to make your own square knot bracelet at home as a fun hobby or gift for someone special.

Prepare the Base String

Start with your 12-inch white string, which will be the base of your bracelet. Using a lighter, carefully burn one end of the string for about 1-2 seconds. While it is still warm, twist the end with your fingers so it becomes thinner and slightly stiff.

This makes it easier to slide beads onto the string. Once the end is ready, begin adding any beads you would like onto the base string. You can use crystal beads, spacer beads, or any design you prefer. Be creative and make the bracelet unique.

Add Charms (optional)

If you want your bracelet to include charms, you will need 6 mm jump rings and pliers. Most charms are small, so jump rings help them hang and move freely.

Use the pliers to gently open a jump ring, attach the charm, and then close the ring tightly. After placing a few beads on the base string, attach your charm and continue adding beads afterwards. This helps center the charm and keeps the design balanced.

Set Up the Bracelet

Next, clamp the string into your bracelet maker or clipboard. Clamp the white base, string so it stays straight and tight while you work.

Take your two 24-inch pink strings and place then underneath the white string so that both sides are equal in length. These pink strings will be used to tie the square knots that form the bracelet pattern.

Begin the Square Knot

To start the bracelet pattern, you will tie square knots using the pink strings around the white base string.

  1. Take the right pink string and shape it like the number 4 over the white string.
  2. Bring the left pink string over the tail of the 4 then behind the base string, and pull it through the loop.
  3. Pull both ends tight to make the first half of the knot

Now repeat on the opposite side

  1. Take the left pink string and create a backwards 4 over the base string.
  2. Bring the right pink strings over it, behind the base string, and through the loop.
  3. Pull tight to complete the square knot.

Continue alternating sides and repeating these knots down the bracelet until you reach the length you want.

Finish the Bracelet Ends

Once the bracelet reaches the desired length, carefully cut the extra string close to the last knot.

Use the lighter to gently burn the ends for about 2-3 seconds so the string melts slightly. Quickly press the end down to seal it so the knot does not untie.

Be careful because the melted sting will be hot.

Make the Adjustable Closure

To make the bracelet adjustable, cut another piece of string about 6-8 inches long.

Place the two loose ends of your bracelet next to each other. Using the new piece of string, tie several square knots, just like you did when making the bracelet. This creates a sliding knot that allows the bracelet to tighten or loosen.

Burn and seal the ends of this string as well. You can also tie small knots at the ends of the bracelet strings to keep them from slipping out.

Finished Bracelet
