Homemade Wood Pumkins

Turn a simple piece of 4×4 lumber into a rustic wooden pumpkin with this easy, affordable woodworking project. It’s perfect for decorating your porch, front yard, or home for Halloween and fall. These sturdy, reusable pumpkins are easy to customize: make them in different heights, paint them in your favorite fall colors, or leave the natural wood grain visible for a rustic look.

Supplies

  1. A miter saw
  2. 4x4 wood post
  3. sander/sandpaper
  4. Drill and a bit, depending on the size of your stem
  5. Sticks for the stem
  6. Paint or stain

Prepare

First, cut your post to your desired size using a miter saw. I made a set of three: a smaller 3-inch piece, a medium 5-inch piece, and a larger 7-inch piece. Having a set allows for more depth and looks much nicer. Once you have cut your post to the desired size, sand it with 80-grit sandpaper, then progress to 120-grit. If you want a very smooth finish, you can use 220-grit, but it isn't necessary. Also sand the corners to create a fillet for a nicer finish.

Color!!

There are a few different ways to add color to your rustic pumpkins. First, you can use solid paint by painting the entire pumpkin, or use spray paint. Another option is to scuff-sand the surface to enhance the rustic look.

If the sanded wood looks really nice, leaving it natural is a good choice as well. Lastly, I opted for a paint wash. To create this, take a little of your desired paint color and mix it with about 60% water, depending on how much color you want. Remember, less water means more paint color.

Let the mixture sit for about 30 seconds to 5 minutes, depending on how much paint you want left on the surface. After that, wipe off the excess with a rag and let it dry.

Stems

To create the stems, gather some sticks or dowels. Using unique or oddly-shaped sticks can add a fun touch. Ensure you have the appropriate-size drill bit. First, find the center of each stick or dowel. Drill about an inch deep, then add some glue and allow it to dry.
