Himalayan salt brick walls can be used as decorative feature walls in homes, spas, wellness rooms, meditation spaces, and sauna interiors. Building one is less about simply stacking salt bricks and more about planning the layout, preparing the surface, choosing compatible materials, and keeping each course properly aligned.

In this project, I'll walk through the basic process of planning and installing a Himalayan salt brick wall using standard 8" × 4" × 2" salt bricks. The same general approach can be adapted for small decorative sections or larger feature walls.

The goal is to create a clean, stable installation while allowing the natural color variation and translucent character of Himalayan salt to remain visible.

Important: Installation requirements can vary depending on the wall substrate, project environment, local building requirements, and adhesive system being used. Always follow the installation instructions and safety requirements for the specific materials selected.

Supplies

The Supplies field should be useful, not stuffed with keywords.

Paste this:

Supplies

  1. Himalayan salt bricks, approximately 8" × 4" × 2"
  2. Salt-brick-compatible adhesive
  3. Measuring tape
  4. Level
  5. Pencil or marking tool
  6. Straightedge
  7. Notched or suitable adhesive applicator, according to the adhesive manufacturer's instructions
  8. Clean cloths for surface preparation
  9. Spacers or temporary supports if required for the selected installation
  10. Appropriate personal protective equipment
  11. Stable, properly prepared wall surface
  12. Optional: suitable LED lighting system for a backlit salt-wall design

For a small project, it is useful to have a few extra bricks available in case a piece is damaged during handling or a different natural color variation is preferred during layout.

Material note: SaltBricks currently lists its standard Himalayan salt bricks at 8" × 4" × 2", with individual and multiple-pack options.

Plan the Wall

Before installing any bricks.png

Before installing any bricks, measure the wall area and decide exactly where the salt-brick section will begin and end.

Measure the width and height of the intended installation area and mark the boundaries. A standard 8" × 4" brick covers approximately 0.22 square feet, so the number of bricks required will depend on the actual wall dimensions and the layout you choose.

Create a simple layout before applying adhesive. Decide whether you want the bricks arranged in a running-bond pattern, stacked pattern, or another layout that suits the design.

Also check for:

  1. electrical outlets
  2. switches
  3. corners
  4. trim
  5. ventilation
  6. doors or other obstructions

Planning the layout first helps reduce unnecessary cutting, repositioning, and material waste later.

Prepare the Wall Surface

The wall surface needs to be clean, stable, dry, and suitable for the adhesive system being used.

Remove dust, loose material, grease, or anything else that could interfere with adhesion. Repair damaged areas and make sure the substrate is structurally appropriate for the weight of the salt bricks.

Check the wall with a level before beginning. If the substrate is significantly uneven, correct the underlying surface rather than trying to compensate for large irregularities with adhesive.

For installations in areas with heat or humidity, consider the environmental conditions before selecting the adhesive and construction method.

Important: Follow the adhesive manufacturer's surface-preparation requirements rather than assuming that one preparation method works for every substrate.

Dry-Fit the Salt Bricks

Before permanently attaching anything, place several bricks against the wall to test the layout.

This is especially useful because Himalayan salt is a natural material, so individual bricks can have different shades ranging from lighter pink to deeper orange.

Arrange the bricks so that the color variation looks intentional rather than concentrating similar shades in one area.

Check:

  1. horizontal alignment
  2. vertical alignment
  3. brick orientation
  4. corner transitions
  5. spacing
  6. overall appearance

Take a photo of the layout before installation. It gives you a reference once the actual installation begins.

Establish a Level Starting Line

The first course is one of the most important parts of the installation.

Use a level and mark a straight reference line where the first course will be positioned.

Don't assume the floor or existing surface is perfectly level. Starting from an uneven reference can cause the error to become more noticeable as additional courses are installed.

If the project requires temporary support for the first course, use an appropriate method that can safely support the bricks while the adhesive system cures.

Take your time here. A few extra minutes spent establishing an accurate starting line can make the rest of the wall considerably easier to align.

Apply the Salt-Brick Adhesive

Prepare and apply the adhesive according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Only use an adhesive system that is appropriate for the salt brick material and the intended installation environment.

Apply the recommended amount rather than using excessive adhesive. Too much adhesive can create unnecessary squeeze-out and make it harder to maintain a clean finished appearance.

Work in manageable sections so the adhesive remains workable while you position the bricks.

For a commercial or larger installation, follow the product-specific application requirements and applicable construction standards.

Install the First Course

Begin placing the bricks along the reference line.

Press each brick into position using controlled, even pressure. Check the level frequently rather than waiting until several bricks have been installed.

Keep an eye on:

  1. horizontal alignment
  2. vertical joints
  3. consistent spacing
  4. brick face alignment
  5. adhesive squeeze-out

If a brick moves out of position, correct it while the adhesive is still workable according to the adhesive manufacturer's instructions.

The first course establishes the visual reference for the rest of the wall, so accuracy is more important than speed.

Continue Building the Wall

Once the first course is properly positioned, continue installing the remaining courses according to your planned layout.

Periodically step back from the wall and inspect the overall appearance. This makes it easier to spot alignment problems or areas where the natural salt colors are becoming concentrated.

Use a level regularly as you work.

For corners and edges, take additional care to maintain a clean transition between the salt-brick section and the surrounding wall.

Avoid rushing through the installation. Natural salt bricks can have subtle differences in color and texture, so taking time to select their placement can significantly improve the finished appearance.

Inspect the Finished Salt Wall

After the final bricks have been installed, inspect the entire wall before considering the project complete.

Check for:

  1. loose bricks
  2. uneven courses
  3. excessive adhesive visible between bricks
  4. damaged pieces
  5. inconsistent spacing
  6. alignment problems
  7. unfinished edges

Allow the adhesive to cure for the period specified by its manufacturer before putting the wall into service.

If you are using backlighting, test the lighting system after the installation is ready and make sure the electrical installation has been completed using an appropriate method for the environment.

The finished wall should show the natural variation of Himalayan salt rather than looking completely uniform. Slight differences in pink, peach, orange, and translucent areas are part of the material's natural appearance.
