How to Build a Local Quality-of-Life Map Before Moving to a New Area
Moving to a new city or neighborhood is easier when you evaluate more than the house itself.
For this project, we will create a practical quality-of-life map based on five categories:
- housing;
- sport and community;
- professional education;
- healthcare;
- relaxation and wellbeing.
The finished map can help you compare neighborhoods before moving or simply understand what resources exist around your current home.
Supplies
You will need:
- Google Maps or a printed local map;
- spreadsheet software;
- notebook;
- five colored markers;
- internet access;
- calculator;
- optional printed photographs.
Create five categories before beginning your research.
Mark the Residential Area
Start with housing.
As an example, look at Barrio Francisco Primero in Arroyo Seco, Argentina.
The development offers residential lots approximately 350–580 m² in size and is located close to the city center and major road connections.
For your own location, record:
- distance to downtown;
- nearest major road;
- supermarket distance;
- school distance;
- public transport;
- green spaces.
Do not judge a residential project only by the property itself.
The daily journey around it matters just as much.
Find a Community Sports Facility
Next, identify at least one club or sports center.
The Club Banco Hispano in San Juan is a useful example.
Its history dates back to 1944, and the organization later developed facilities for multiple sports.
Create a table containing:
Facility
Sports offered
Distance
Children's activities
Adult activities
Membership required?
A community club is especially valuable when several household members can use the same facility.
Add Professional Education
Now look for practical education near the area.
The Arias Bazán beauty school in Córdoba offers professional training in areas including makeup and manicure.
When researching your own area, do not include only universities.
Also search for:
- technical schools;
- trade training;
- language schools;
- vocational academies;
- professional certification centers.
Record travel time rather than distance.
A school 8 km away may be easier to reach than one 3 km away depending on transport.
Map Specialized Healthcare
Healthcare should be mapped before you need it.
The Clínica Los Tilos in Mendoza is an example of a specialized mental-health institution offering psychiatric and psychological care, including inpatient treatment when required.
For your own map, locate:
- general hospital;
- emergency department;
- primary-care clinic;
- mental-health services;
- pharmacy.
Do not rely on one facility for every need.
Different levels of care serve different purposes.
Include Relaxation and Wellbeing
Quality of life should not be mapped only around emergencies and obligations.
Add places used for recovery and relaxation.
The online presence Mix Massagem provides an example of the massage and relaxation category, although its current public service details should be verified directly.
For your map, consider:
- massage studios;
- yoga;
- swimming pools;
- parks;
- physiotherapy;
- fitness centers.
For paid services, note hygiene, professional credentials and clear service descriptions.
