How to Change Your Own Oil

Having an oil change is a routine service for car maintenance. Everyone should know how to change your oil to save a little money!

Supplies

  1. Oil (specific to your car)
  2. Jack (to lift your car)
  3. Oil Filter
  4. Oil pan
  5. Oil Filter Socket (removes oil filter)
  6. Wrench or Ratchet
  7. Funnel
  8. Rag

Access Engine Oil Cap

Turn off your car wait 30-60 minutes to let the engine cool off. Place jack under car and have it lift the car up. Unlock and unlatch the hood of your car. Access your motor and take off the engine oil cap.

Place Oil Pan

Get your wretch and oil pan together. Place the oil pan under the oil plug.

Untighten the oil plug and allow the oil to drain. Take your oil filter socket off and replace it. Before you place the oil filter on place some of the drained oil around the ring of the oil filter. Place the oil filter back on and tighten by hand.

Dipstick Check

Go back to the hood of the car then take your funnel to pour your oil into where the engine oil cap was. Check your oil levels locate your dipstick under the hood usually near the oil fill cap. Use the top notch to know that the oil is filled.

Overfilled Oil and More Dipstick Checks

If the oil is over filled drain the excess using the oil drain plug. Repeat until the oil is filled. After doing this process check the oil level using the dipstick.

You Have Now Changed Your Oil!

Place your oil cap back on and shut the hood. Take the jacks off your car. Rub your hands with the rag to get the oil off. Start your car and see if any lights come on the dashboard. If so, please contact your local mechanic. If not you're good to go!
