Checking your engine oil is one of the simplest car maintenance tasks you can do yourself. It takes less than 5 minutes and can save you from serious engine damage. In this guide, I'll show you exactly how to do it step by step.

Supplies

- Clean cloth or paper towel

- Your car manual (check recommended oil type)

Gather What You Need

- Your car (engine off and cooled down for 10 minutes) - A clean cloth or paper towel - That's it!

Open the Hood and Find the Dipstick

Pop the hood and locate the oil dipstick — it usually has a yellow or orange ring handle.

Pull it out completely and wipe it clean with your cloth.

Check the Oil Level

Reinsert the dipstick fully, then pull it out again. Look at the tip —

there are two marks (MIN and MAX). The oil film should be between them.

If it's below MIN, you need to add oil immediately.

Check the Oil Quality

Rub the oil between your fingers. It should be amber/brown and slightly transparent.

If it's black and gritty, it's time for an oil change.

If you're unsure or not comfortable doing this yourself,

a professional auto service center like Orlov Auto Service

can handle oil checks and changes quickly and at a fair price.

Close Everything Up

Reinsert the dipstick firmly, close the hood, and you're done.

Repeat this check every 1,000 km or once a month.
