Curving text can completely change the feel of a design. The use of a curved or arched text in a design, adds motion, balance, and makes the layout look more appealing.

Can you curve text in Canva? Two years ago the answer would have been, no. But, now Canva curved text effect is available, free and easy to use inside the tool.

Follow along step by step this tutorial to learn how to curve text in Canva in just a few minutes.

Supplies

To curve text in Canva you don't need any supplies, only a free user account.

Start by Adding Your Text

The first step is to add your text. Before doing anything fancy, decide what your text should say and how prominent it needs to be. Curved text works best for titles, logos, or short phrases rather than long sentences.

What to do:

  1. Open your design in Canva
  2. Go to the left sidebar and click “Text”
  3. Choose “Add a heading” for bold, large text (recommended)
  4. Type your message

Extra guidance:

  1. Try to keep your text between 1–5 words
  2. Avoid long sentences as they become hard to read when curved
  3. If you're designing a logo or badge, think of how the text might wrap around a shape

Select Your Text Properly

c2.jpg

🎯 This step sounds simple, but it’s where many people get stuck. If the text isn’t selected correctly, the effects won’t apply.

You need to tell Canva exactly what element you want to edit.

What to do:

  1. Click once on your text box
  2. You should see a bounding box appear around it
  3. The top toolbar should now be visible

Extra guidance:

  1. If you accidentally select the background instead, click again directly on the text
  2. Make sure you're not in typing mode (cursor blinking)—just select the whole box
  3. You can drag the text slightly to confirm it’s selected

Open the Effects Panel

🎨 This is where Canva hides all the styling tools that go beyond basic text editing.

The Effects panel allows you to transform your text visually, not just change font or size.

What to do:

  1. Look at the top toolbar
  2. Click on “Effects”

Extra guidance:

  1. A side panel will open with multiple options like Shadow, Lift, Splice, etc.
  2. These are all visual effects—but for this tutorial, focus only on Curve
  3. If you don’t see “Effects,” double-check that your text is selected

Apply the Curve Effect

🌈 Now you’re transforming straight text into a circle shape and the result is curving text in Canva.

This effect automatically bends your text along an invisible arc.

What to do:

  1. In the Effects panel, scroll if needed
  2. Click on “Curve”

What happens next:

  1. Your text will instantly curve
  2. By default, it applies a moderate curve

Extra guidance:

  1. Don’t worry if it looks too curved or awkward at first—you’ll adjust it next
  2. The curve applies evenly across all letters

Adjust the Curve Intensity

This is where you control the direction of the curved text.

The curve slider lets you fine-tune how much the text bends.

What to do:

  1. Find the curve slider under the Curve option
  2. Drag it left or right

How it works:

  1. Slide right (positive values) → text curves downward (like a smile)
  2. Slide left (negative values) → text curves upward (like a rainbow arch)

Extra guidance:

  1. Small adjustments make a big difference—move slowly
  2. Use:
  3. Low curve (10–30): clean and professional
  4. Medium (30–60): noticeable and stylish
  5. High (60+): strong effect (great for logos or badges)
  6. If your text looks stretched, try resizing the text box

Refine and Polish Your Curved Text

🛠️ This is the step that separates “just okay” from “looks professionally designed.”

Once your text is curved, you’ll usually need to tweak spacing and size so everything looks balanced.

What to do:

  1. Adjust letter spacing (from the top toolbar → Spacing)
  2. Resize the text box by dragging corners
  3. Change font type and font size if needed
  4. From Advanced menu add layer styles and text effects

Extra guidance:

  1. If letters look too tight, increase spacing slightly
  2. If the curve feels too wide, make the text box narrower
  3. Bold fonts usually look better because thin fonts can distort when curved
  4. Step back and zoom out—this helps you judge the overall balance

Use Curved Text With Shapes

c7.jpg

🚀 Curved text looks best when it follows something.

Try pairing your text with:

  1. Circles (for logos or badges)
  2. Arches (for headings)
  3. Waves (for creative social posts)

How to experiment:

  1. Add a circle shape and place your text around it
  2. Duplicate text to create a top and bottom curve (common logo style)
