How to Design and Make Personalized Matchbooks Using Canva
Personalized matchbooks are a fun and creative way to add a custom touch to events, gifts, or home decor. They can be used for parties, weddings, restaurants, or as a unique keepsake. Instead of ordering expensive custom matchbooks online, you can design and assemble them yourself using simple materials and a free design platform. This guide explains how to create personalized matchbooks using Canva and apply them to standard matchbooks. By following these steps, you can produce your very own matchbooks with any design you want while also saving money.
Supplies
- Standard Matchbooks
- Computer with Internet Access
- Canva Account
- Printer
- Sticker Paper
- Scissors or Paper Cutter
- Ruler
- Pencil
Gather Your Materials
Collect all the needed supplies for the project and have them easily accessible in your workspace.
Measure the Matchbook Cover
Use a ruler to measure the dimensions of the matchbook cover. Measure the front panel, spine, and back panel. Write down the total width and height of the cover so you can size the template correctly.
Create a Cutom Design in Canva
Open your web browser and navigate to Canva. Select 'Create a Design' and choose 'Custom Size.' Then enter the full length and width of the matchbook cover that you previously measured. Creating a custom design allows the template to print at the correct size so that it will align properly when you place it onto the matchbook.
Design the Matchbook
Begin designing the panels of the matchbook and add any elements you desire, whether that be a picture, phrase, pattern, or logo. Use whatever fonts and colors that might please you.
Extend the Design Across the Template
Expand your design across the full canvas so that it includes the spine and back panels.
Download and Print the Template
Download your finished design from Canva as a 'PDF For Print' file. Print the design on the sticker paper. This allows the paper to be placed directly onto the matchbook and stick, rather than using glue or tape. Make sure your printer is set to 100% scale so the design prints at the correct size.
Cut the Matchbook Labels
Use scissors or a paper cutter to cut out each label from the sheet. Cut straight and follow the edges carefully. Precise cutting helps the matchbook have a cleaner look.
Wrap the Label Around the Matchbook
Make sure to check the alignment before sticking the paper to the matchbook to ensure it fits correctly and lines up as perfectly as possible. Place the matchbook in the center of the label and fold the paper around it. Press along the edges of the matchbook to create crease lines for the front panel, spine, and back label. Press firmly and smooth out the paper along the matchbook to take away any creases.
Inspect Finished Matchbook
Examine the finished matchbook to make sure the label is straight and that everywhere along the matchbook is smooth, stays in place, and meets your standard. Repeat the process with additional matchbooks until you have reached your desired amount. Once finished, the matchbooks are ready for use. Display them, hand them out at parties, use them as wedding favors, or just as keepsakes.
