Supplies
- Broken plastic rack or plastic item
- Drill machine
- Screw
- Cutting tool for removing the screw head
- Baking soda
- Super glue
Remove the Broken Part
I had a plastic rack whose stand had broken on one side and was about to break completely. The damaged stand had become unusable, so I first removed the broken part from the rack to make the repair easier.
Drill Holes in Both Broken Pieces
After removing the damaged part, I started the repair by using a drill machine. I carefully drilled a hole into one of the broken pieces. Then, I drilled another hole of the same size into the other broken piece.
The holes needed to align properly because they would be used to connect the two broken sections.
Prepare the Screw
Next, I took a screw and removed its top head using a cutting tool. This left me with a straight section of the screw that could be used as an internal connector.
The goal was to have a similar length of screw available on both sides of the broken plastic pieces.
Insert the Screw Into the Broken Plastic
I inserted one half of the prepared screw into the hole in the first broken piece. Then, I inserted the other half into the hole in the second piece.
Since the plastic stand had broken into two sections, the screw acted like an internal joining pin to connect both pieces.
Bring the Two Pieces Together
I slowly brought the two broken pieces closer together. As they came together, the screw held them in place and helped align the two sections.
Once the pieces were properly connected and tightened, the broken stand became much more stable.
Fill the Remaining Gaps
After joining the pieces, there were a few small gaps and imperfections around the repaired area. To improve the repair and fill these gaps, I applied baking soda and super glue.
I added the baking soda to the area and applied super glue over it. This created a hard filler around the joint and helped reinforce the repaired section.
Test the Repair
Once the repair was complete, I tested the repaired stand to check its strength. The connection was surprisingly strong and held the broken pieces together properly.
Reassemble the Rack
Finally, I put the repaired stand back onto the rack. It fitted properly into its original position, and the rack was ready to be used again.
The rack could once again be used for keeping decoration items, so there was no need to throw it away or buy a replacement.
Final Result
This simple plastic repair without welding helped me save an item that was almost ready to be discarded. By using a screw as an internal connector and reinforcing the joint with baking soda and super glue, I was able to complete the home plastic repair with basic supplies.
Instead of immediately throwing away broken plastic items or calling a repairman, it is worth checking whether a simple DIY repair can restore them. This how to repair broken plastic at home technique can be useful for many suitable plastic items, depending on the type and condition of the plastic.
