How to Laser Cut a Wooden Roll Top Bread Box Step by Step Tutorial
A good bread box keeps your countertop cleaner while giving the kitchen a warmer and more organized look.
The smooth roll top design also makes it practical for everyday use without taking up too much space. With laser cutting, flat plywood sheets can become a functional storage piece with clean slots, fitted panels, and movable roll top slats.
In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to laser cut and assemble a wooden roll top bread box step by step. From flat wooden boards to a finished kitchen storage box, the process is simpler than it looks.

Prepare & Position the Material
Select 3mm plywood sheets suitable for the bread box structure and roll top slats. Place the plywood flat on the laser bed and ensure it stays within the Thunder Bolt’s working area.
Before processing, wipe the surface clean to remove dust, fingerprints, or loose debris. If the wood is slightly warped, use pins to secure the corners and keep the material stable during engraving and cutting.
Import & Adjust the Design File
Open your laser software, such as LaserMaker, and import the bread box design file.
Adjust the engraving and cutting parameters according to the type and thickness of your wood. Check that all structural parts, slots, and roll top pieces are properly arranged before sending the file to the laser machine.
Set the Correct Laser Focus
Set the laser focus to the surface of the wood before starting the job.
Accurate focus helps produce cleaner cutting edges and more precise slot fitting, which is especially important for movable parts like the roll top cover.
Frame the Design & Start Engraving and Cutting
Before processing, use the frame function to preview the engraving and cutting area. This helps confirm that all parts fit correctly within the material.
Once everything is aligned, start the engraving and cutting process. Stay nearby while the machine is running and ensure ventilation is working properly throughout the job.
Post Processing
After processing is complete, remove all finished parts from the laser bed and gently clean away dust or residue.
Assemble the bread box according to the design structure, paying extra attention to the alignment of the roll top slats so they slide smoothly during use. Secure the parts if needed and check that the cover opens and closes properly.
Your wooden roll top bread box is now ready to use.
