How to Make Your Own Dip - $0.30 Per Can

20200516_215837.jpg

DISCLAIMER: do not do this if you are under the legal age to use tobacco products in your state/country

why would you want to make your own dip?

this 1lb bag of pipe tobacco cost me $12. you end up using about 8 grams of tobacco per can.

1lb = 454g

454/8 = 56.75 cans

$12/56.75 = $0.21 per can (for tobacco only)

it may not taste like cope, but your wallet will think it tastes better than cope!

this recipe is only for one can of dip. i suggest only making one can at a time so you can adjust the recipe to your taste. And if you mess it up you won't have a quarter pound of nasty dip. also don't worry about getting the measurements exactly right, it's not a science.

ingredients in order of importance:

-pipe tobacco (cheap kind)

-baking soda

-molasses

-vanilla extract or mint extract, or both. get peppermint extract if you want a minty flavor and cooling sensation. get spearmint extract if you want something closer to a wintergreen flavor. (I prefer to use only vanilla extract)

-salt

Boil Water

approx. 1/4 cup

Dissolve Baking Soda and Salt

add about 1 TBSP of baking soda.

baking soda is important! because pipe tobacco is meant to be smoked, manufactures acidify the tobacco to make it easier on the lungs. baking soda will balance out the pH and make the nicotine more bioavailable.

add a pinch of salt if you like.

Add Molasess

add about 1 TBSP

Cook on Medium-low Heat

cook and swirl consistently until the foam starts to disappear. the final consistency should be akin to very thin syrup.

Add a Few Drops of Flavoring (optional)

after you have removed it from the burner, add any flavorings you have. if you don't have anything to add, the dip will taste fine on it's own.

Add and Mix Tobacco

the volume of the tobacco you add should be slightly more than what fits in the can. thoroughly mix the syrup with the tobacco. squeeze the tobacco against the corner of the pan to fully incorporate the juice.

Finished!
