How to Make a DIY Crackle Squishy (No-Wax Method)
Squishies are great, but crack squishies take tactile crafts to a whole new level. This Instructables project demonstrates how to use air-dry foam clay and everyday UV gel nail polish to create a custom, crunchable sensory toy. This technique relies on a hard-versus-soft contrast: the clay forms a flexible, compressible core, while the UV nail polish forms a brittle, glass-like shell. When squeezed, the shell fractures into a beautiful mosaic of cracks while the clay safely decompresses underneath. This guide will walk you through shaping, curing rules, and how to avoid ruining your clay base under the UV light.
Supplies
To make these sensory crack squishies, you will need air-dry foam clay, UV gel nail polish, a UV top coat, and either a UV lamp or direct sunlight for curing.
Gather Your Mistrials
Gather your materials and Start by rolling the clay between your hands in a circular motion to form a sphere. While you can experiment with other shapes, ensure the clay base remains thick and sturdy to support the shell.
Apply First Cracking Layer
apply first cracking layer, select one half of the sphere and apply a layer of UV gel nail polish. It is important to paint only one side at a time to prevent the polish from touching your workspace or the bottom surface while it cures.
First Time Curing
Curing, place your painted clay under a UV lamp until it is fully hardened; alternatively, you can leave it in direct sunlight until the polish has completely cured.
Fully Cover Sphear
Fully cover your sphere. One the first half of your sphere is fully cured, rotate the clay ball to paint the remaining surface with your UV gel polish. Repeat the curing process under your UV lamp or in direct sunlight, ensuring all sides of the clay are evenly coated.
2nd Layer
To build up the shell, apply a second layer of gel polish. I recommend using a different color, as it makes it easier to track your progress and ensure full coverage. Repeat the painting and curing process used in the previous step until the entire surface is coated.
Last Coat
Finally, apply a layer of UV top coat to seal the sphere and give it a glossy finish. Using the same technique as before, carefully coat the entire surface and cure it under your UV lamp to ensure the shell is fully set and ready to be cracked.
Playing With Squishie
Finally, it's time to squish and play with your new creation—enjoy the satisfying, crisp crack of your custom sensory toy!
