How to Make a Rolling Tool Organizer
In this instructable I will show you how to make a rolling tool organizer. The idea is that someone working on a project can roll their tools and supplies with them, organize small pieces in the clear containers, use the cork section for tools, and can conveniently have it next to them while working on projects. This addresses a need/want because people working on cars need an easy way to keep their tools, screws, and small parts organized and near by.
Supplies
Wooden board
Scrap wood pieces
Four caster wheels
Screws
Screwdriver/Drill
Measuring tape
Cork board
Clear plastic organizers
Retractable badge holder
Spray paint (Any color)
Glue
Hand saw
C-Clamp
Gather and Plan Your Materials
First, I gathered all of the materials I wanted to use for my project. I used a large wooden board for the base and smaller pieces of wood to create the sides and different sections. Before attaching anything, I laid everything out to decide where I wanted each part to go. My wooden board is 19 inches long x 10 inches wide and my side pieces are 16 inches long. Make your measurements and mark with a pencil. The center wood pieces are 8 1/2 inches.
Clamp and Cut the Wood
After measuring the wood and making my markings, I needed to cut the pieces to the correct sizes. I secured each piece of wood using a C-clamp so that it would not move while I was cutting. I then used a hand saw to cut the wood along the measurements I had marked. I repeated this until I had all of the pieces I needed for the frame dividers. I would recommend using good solid cuts of wood.
Attach the Wheels
Next, I attached four caster wheels to the bottom of the wooden base. I placed one wheel on each corner and secured them with screws using my screwdriver. The wheels allow the organizer to easily move around 360 degrees while someone is working. You will need wood screws around 3/4" - 1"
Build the Wooden Frame
Once the wheels were attached, I started building the frame. I attached the smaller pieces of wood around the base with glue but if you have any available I would recommend using wood screws around 1 1/4" to 1 1/2", I would recommend using good solid wood to avoid splitting. You can also use wood glue. I also added a wooden divider to separate the different sections of the rolling tool organizer.
Paint the Frame
After I finished building the wooden frame, I spray painted the base and frame brown. I made sure the wood was covered with at least 3 coats of paint and then allowed it to dry COMPLETELY before adding the rest of the pieces. This will help give your rolling tool organizer a more finished look.
Add Cork Area
After the paint dried, I added the cork board. I cut the cork so that it would fit inside one section of the rolling tool organizer and attached it to the wooden base with glue. This creates a separate area for your tools or smaller items.
Add Storage and Accessories
Next, I added to the storage section. These compartments can be used to keep smaller items like screws organized instead of having them loose or out of reach. I did not attach this to the base on purpose so that if you needed more space for tools you could just take that part out. I attached the retractable badge holder to the front using a screw so that you can pull your rolling tool organizer anywhere you need it to go.
Add Final Pieces and Finish Rolling Tool Organizer
Finally, I made sure all parts were secure, checking the wheels, storage containers, cork area, wooden pieces, and accessories to make sure everything was where I wanted it. Once everything was put together my rolling tool organizer was complete. I also took pictures and added a cool background using chat GBT. Prompt was "Place my wooden tool organizer in a a work shop or somewhere relevant"
