How to Make and Stamp Leather Keyrings With a 3d Printed Stamp

Professional-looking leather stamping doesn't require expensive metal stamps or hydraulic presses. With a converted arbor press, a 3D printed stamp, and vegetable-tanned leather, you can produce crisp, repeatable designs with very little effort.

In this instructable Ill show how to stamp veg tanned leather with a 3d printed stamp. The 3d printed stamp works well and gives beautiful results.

Equipment

1. Converted arbor press- basically I welded a piece at the top
2. 3D printed leather stamp
3. Leather cutting die

Materials

1. Vegetable-tanned leather (2–4 mm works well)
2. Pure neatsfoot oil or your preferred leather oil

Create your design . I used tinkercad. Basially I designed it on canva, downloaded as a png and then converted it to svg and uploaded on tinkercad

For best results:

1. Raised portions become the stamped design.
2. Avoid extremely thin details. This will flatten out under presure
3. Round sharp inside corners where possible.
4. Make sure the stamp has a flat base.

Recommended 3D Printing Settings

1. Material: PLA or PETG
2. Layer height: 0.2 mm
3. 100% infill
4. The base was about 3mm high and the design itself aroung 2mm

The stamp should be strong enough to withstand repeated pressing. It should give up after about 50 stamps, but its cheap and easy to reprint

Install the leather cutting die onto the arbor press.

Position your vegetable-tanned leather on the cutting surface.

Pull the press firmly until the leather is completely cut.

Remove the leather blank.

Now you have a perfectly shaped piece ready for stamping.

I basically dipped and pulled out the leather 3 times. You will have to play round with the time you keep the leather in till you find what suits you

Place the damp leather onto the press.

Carefully align the 3D printed stamp over the leather.

Take your time.

Once pressure is applied, the design cannot easily be repositioned.

The leather below is just to help move the stamp and leather on and off the press

Slowly pull the arbor press until firm pressure is applied.

This will take some tests till you get the correct pressure

You should now have a clean, deep impression.

Lay the leather flat.

Allow it to air dry completely.

Do not speed up drying with a heater, oven, or direct sunlight.

Natural drying produces the best results and helps the impression remain crisp.

I normally leave it for 2 days to dry

Once completely dry, apply leather oil. I normally use neatsfoot oil. Dont put too much as it will get too oily and attract dust

The oil will:

1. Enhance the colour
2. Improve flexibility
3. Help prevent cracking

With this particular stamp I then puch the holes and rivet the keyring in.

Using a converted arbor press with a 3D printed stamp is an affordable and reliable way to create professional-looking leather impressions. Once you've dialled in the correct moisture level and pressing pressure, you can consistently produce clean, detailed designs suitable for gifts, small businesses, and production work.
