How to Paint and Refresh an Old Garden Statue (Easy Outdoor Upcycle)

If you have a garden statue that’s faded from years of sun and weather, a little paint can bring it right back to life. My sweet toad on a toadstool has been sitting on our patio for years, slowly losing color. Instead of replacing him, I decided to brighten him up with acrylic paint and a few whimsical details.

This simple project works for any outdoor statue — animals, mushrooms, gnomes, fairies, and more.

1. Garden statue (mine is a toad on a toadstool)
2. Sandpaper
3. Acrylic paints
4. Small detail brushes
5. Mod Podge or outdoor sealer

Give your statue a quick sanding to smooth out chipped or peeling paint. This helps the new paint adhere better and gives you a clean surface to work on. It only takes a few minutes, but it makes a big difference.

Once the surface feels smooth, begin adding your base colors. For my toad, I used:

1. Dark green for the body
2. Lighter green for the chest
3. Black and white for the eyes
4. Soft reds and yellows for the toadstool

Even just refreshing the original colors makes the statue feel lively again.

Now it’s time to bring your statue to life with small, charming details. I added:

1. Little flowers
2. Soft blades of grass
3. A tiny bumblebee tucked near the blooms

These touches give the statue a gentle, storybook feel.

Once all the paint is completely dry, brush on a coat of Mod Podge or your favorite outdoor sealer. This protects the colors, adds a soft sheen, and helps your statue handle sun and rain. Let it cure fully before placing it back outside.

My toad looks cheerful again — bright, refreshed, and ready for another season outdoors. It’s amazing how a simple paint refresh can bring so much joy to a space.
