Build the Base Frame
Take one large wooden board as the base. Then take two smaller wooden blocks and attach them to the base using screws. Make one block slightly higher than the other so there is about a 15–20° knife sharpening angle between them.
Prepare the Sanding Arm
Take another wooden piece and drill a hole through it. Insert a small metal rod into the hole and secure it firmly. Then glue a piece of sandpaper onto this wooden piece so it stays firmly in place.
Mount the Knife
Place the knife on the first wooden frame and secure it with screws and washers. Tighten it so the knife remains stable while sharpening.
Install the Rod Guide
On the taller support of the frame, install an eye screw or any round guide with a hole large enough for the rod to pass through smoothly.
Assemble the Sharpening Tool
Insert the rod through the eye screw and position the sandpaper next to the knife's cutting edge. This creates a simple tool sharpening guide that keeps the sharpening motion controlled.
Sharpen the First Side
Move the sanding arm back and forth along the knife edge. The fixed angle helps sharpen the blade evenly, making it one of the best way to sharpen kitchen knives with this DIY setup.
Sharpen the Other Side
After one side is sharpened, turn the knife over and repeat the same process on the other side until both edges are sharpened evenly.
Finish the Project
Once both sides are sharpened, the knife will cut vegetables, fruits, and other items much more smoothly. You can easily make this DIY sharpening tool at home, and even if it wears out over time, it can be rebuilt at very little cost. If you enjoy DIY projects or want to learn how to sharpen tools, this is a simple project worth trying.
