Upcycling everyday household waste is a great way to turn plain trash into functional technology. In this project, I will show you how to transform raw cardboard paper towel rolls into a high-performance, double-barrel acoustic speaker dock for your smartphone.By taking advantage of a completely passive "H-frame" geometry, this zero-cost design splits, funnels, and naturally amplifies the sound waves coming out of your phone's speaker without requiring any external electricity or additional battery power for the dock itself!

Supplies

  1. Three paper towel rolls
  2. Scissors
  3. A roller
  4. A marker
  5. A phone

First, take your two side paper towel rolls and find the middle of each roll.Next, use your scissors to cut a round hole directly into the side of the left roll and the right roll.Make sure the holes are just big enough for your third paper towel roll to slide into tightly.

Take the remaining third paper towel roll to create your central audio crossbar.Place your marker flat against the center of the roll to trace a slot that matches your phone's thickness.Carefully pierce the cardboard with your scissors and cut out the rectangular slot.Test your smartphone in the opening to make sure it sits securely at a stable viewing angle.

Take your central crossbar roll and align it with the holes you cut into the two side barrels.Firmly press the left and right ends of the crossbar into the openings to establish the structural H-frame geometry.Ensure all connections are perfectly tight and flush so that no acoustic energy or sound pressure leaks out of the joints.

Coloring

Take the time to color and personalize your speaker dock to give it a polished, professional finish. You can use markers, paint, or wrapping paper to completely cover the raw cardboard and match your personal style.

Insert your smartphone into the top slot with the built-in speaker facing straight down into the central chamber.Launch your favorite audio track or video and observe the immediate boost in volume. The zero-cost passive design naturally splits and funnels the sound waves out through both side barrels to double your output completely wirelessly.
