I Made a Red Elixir of Life Bottle
Have you ever imagined carrying a magical artifact that looks like it came straight from an ancient alchemist's laboratory?
Inspired by fantasy stories, mythical elixirs, and the legendary Elixir of Life, I set out to create a Red Elixir of Life Bottle that radiates a mesmerizing crimson glow. Although it looks like it contains powerful magic, the enchanting glow is produced using a safe lighting effect, creating the illusion of a mystical life-giving elixir sealed inside a tiny glass bottle.
This miniature glowing bottle also doubles as a keychain, making it a perfect accessory for cosplay, fantasy enthusiasts, Halloween decorations, RPG props, or anyone who enjoys crafting magical-looking creations.
In this Instructable, I'll guide you through every step—from preparing the glowing bottle and assembling the components to achieving the rich red magical effect. The project is beginner-friendly, requires only a handful of materials, and the finished result looks like a priceless relic that could have been discovered in a forgotten wizard's vault.
So, if you've ever wanted to carry a glowing Red Elixir of Life wherever you go, let's create some magic!
Supplies
Materials
- 10 Red Glow Sticks
- 2 Small Glass Bottles with Screw CapsOne bottle for the fluorescent dye solution
- One bottle for the activator solution
- Keychain Ring and Chain (Optional)
Tools
- ✂️ Sharp Utility Knife / Craft Knife
- Thin Metal Needle or Pin (to remove the inner glass ampoule from the glow stick)
- Plastic Dropper or Pipette (Optional, for easier liquid transfer)
- Tweezers (Optional)
- Paper Towels (for cleaning any spills)
Safety Equipment

- Safety Glasses
Why 10 Glow Sticks?
I used 10 red glow sticks to collect enough fluorescent dye solution and activator to completely fill both bottles. Using multiple glow sticks also produces a much brighter and longer-lasting glow than using just one.
It's Not Black Magic... It's Science!
How Does the Red Elixir Glow?
At first glance, this glowing Red Elixir of Life looks like a magical artifact straight from an ancient alchemist's workshop. Its mysterious crimson glow gives the illusion of a powerful life-giving potion—but the real magic is actually science.
The glowing effect comes from a fascinating process called chemiluminescence, where a chemical reaction releases energy in the form of visible light instead of heat. That's why glow sticks shine brightly while remaining cool to the touch.
What's Inside a Glow Stick?
A standard glow stick contains two separate chemical solutions that only react when mixed:
- Hydrogen Peroxide (H₂O₂) – Stored inside a tiny sealed glass ampoule in the center of the glow stick. It acts as the activator.
- Oxalate Ester (typically TCPO or CPPO) – Found in the outer solution. This compound reacts with the hydrogen peroxide.
- Red Fluorescent Dye – Mixed with the outer solution, this dye determines the color of the emitted light.
- Solvent – Keeps the chemicals dissolved and helps control the speed of the reaction.
As long as these chemicals remain separated, the glow stick stays inactive.
The Science Behind the Glow
When the inner glass ampoule is snapped, the hydrogen peroxide mixes with the oxalate ester. This reaction creates a high-energy intermediate, which transfers its energy to the red fluorescent dye.
The dye molecules become excited and then release that energy as a brilliant crimson glow. Because the energy is released as light rather than heat, the bottle glows without needing:
- 🔋 Batteries
- 💡 LEDs
- 🔥 Flames
- ⚡ Electricity
Why Does It Glow for So Long?
Unlike a flash of light, this chemical reaction happens gradually. As long as there are reactants remaining, the fluorescent dye continues to emit light. Over time the chemicals are consumed, causing the glow to slowly fade until the reaction is complete.
Because this project combines the contents of 10 red glow sticks, it contains much more reactive material than a single glow stick. The result is a brighter, richer crimson glow that lasts significantly longer, making the bottle look like a legendary Elixir of Life.
Fun Fact: Chemiluminescence is used in glow sticks because it provides safe, portable illumination without electricity or an open flame. That's why glow sticks are widely used by campers, emergency responders, divers, military personnel, and for emergency lighting.
Open the Glow Sticks & Separate the Two Chemical Solutions
Now it's time to separate the two liquids inside the glow sticks. To create a brighter and longer-lasting crimson glow, I used 10 red glow sticks for this project.
⚠️ Safety First: Wear gloves and safety glasses before starting. Work in a well-ventilated area and avoid direct contact with the liquids.
Cut the Glow Sticks
Using a sharp utility knife or craft knife, carefully cut both sealed ends of each glow stick.
Be careful while cutting. Cut slowly and always point the glow stick away from yourself to avoid accidental splashes.
Collect the Outer Liquid
Hold the glow stick over Bottle 1 and allow the outer liquid to drain into it.
Repeat this process for all 10 glow sticks, collecting all of the outer liquid in the same bottle.
Remove the Inner Tube
Inside every glow stick is a small, brittle plastic tube that contains the second liquid.
Using a thin needle or metal pin, gently push the plastic tube out through one end of the glow stick.
⚠️ Be extra careful during this step. The inner tube is made from thin, brittle plastic. It can crack if too much force is applied, so push it out slowly and gently to avoid damaging it or spilling the liquid inside.
Drain the Inner Tube Liquid Into Bottle 2
Now that you've removed all of the inner tubes, it's time to collect the liquid stored inside them.
Cut One End of the Tube
Using a sharp utility knife or craft knife, carefully cut one end of the inner tube.
You may notice that the liquid doesn't come out immediately. This is completely normal because the tube is still sealed at the opposite end, creating pressure that prevents the liquid from flowing.
Place the Tube Over Bottle 2
Hold the cut end of the tube inside Bottle 2, making sure it's positioned securely so none of the liquid is wasted.
Cut the Other End
While keeping the first end inside the bottle, carefully cut the other sealed end of the tube.
As soon as both ends are open, air enters the tube, releasing the pressure and allowing the entire liquid inside to drain automatically into Bottle 2.
Repeat this process for all 10 inner tubes, collecting all of the liquid in the same bottle.
💡 Tip: Keep the tube inside the bottle while cutting the second end. This helps prevent spills and ensures you collect every last drop of the liquid.
Mix the Two Solutions & Watch the Magic Happen! ✨
Carefully pour the inner liquid from Bottle 2 into Bottle 1, which contains the outer liquid.
Immediately close the bottle with its cap and shake it well for a few seconds. This allows both liquids to mix completely, creating an even reaction throughout the bottle.
Within seconds, you'll witness the transformation—the clear liquids instantly turn into a brilliant, bright crimson-red glowing potion. The intense red light spreads evenly throughout the bottle, giving it the appearance of a real magical elixir.
Enjoy the Glowing Effect
Turn off the lights and watch your Crimson Witch Potion come to life! The bottle emits a bright red glow without any batteries, LEDs, or electricity, creating a stunning magical effect that can last for several hours before gradually fading.
Whether you use it as a decoration, a cosplay prop, a Halloween accessory, or a unique keychain, your Crimson Witch Potion is now complete.
💡 Tip: For the brightest and most even glow, shake the bottle immediately after mixing. Once the two liquids are combined, the glowing reaction begins instantly and cannot be stopped.
Final Thoughts
Congratulations! You've successfully created your own Red Elixir of Life Bottle That Actually Glows.
What looks like a legendary magical elixir is actually powered by the fascinating science of chemiluminescence. By keeping the two chemical solutions separate and mixing them only when you're ready, you can produce a brilliant crimson glow—without batteries, LEDs, electricity, or an open flame.
I hope you enjoyed building this project as much as I enjoyed designing it. Whether you use it as a fantasy display piece, a cosplay accessory, a Halloween decoration, a unique keychain, or simply as an eye-catching science project, it's sure to spark curiosity and start conversations wherever you take it.
