Instructions for Preparing Chicken Broccoli Casserole
Chicken Broccoli casserole is one of my family's classic comfort foods that combines cooked chicken, rice, broccoli, cheese, and a creamy sauce baked together in a casserole. This recipe is a warm meal that can serve several people and is usually prepared for family dinners or occasions. The instructions below provide clear steps to help cooks prepare this dish right.
Supplies
Ingredients
Before you begin the recipe, gather all ingredients and measure them carefully.
You will need:
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cooked and shredded
- 1 medium head of broccoli, shipped into small florets and cooked
- 2 cups of cooked white rice
- 10 ounces shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 (10 ounce) can condensed cream of chicken soup
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- Nonstick cooking spray or butter for greasing the dish
Equipment Needed
Before starting the cooking process, make sure you have the following equipment
- Oven
- 13 x 9 baking dish
- Large mixing bowl
- Medium pot
- Cooking utensils
- Measuring cups and measuring spoons
- Knife and cutting board
Preheat the Oven
Begin by turning on the oven and setting the temperature to 350°F(175°C). Allow the oven a couple minutes to fully heat before placing the casserole inside. Preheating ensures the casserole cooks evenly.
Prepare the Baking Dish
Take a 13 x 9 inch baking dish and coat the inside with nonstick cooking spray or some butter.
Spread the spray or butter evenly across the bottom and sides of the dish. This step prevents the casserole from sticking to the dish while baking and makes it easier to serve.
Cook the Rice
If the rice has not already been prepared, cook 2 cups of white rice according to the instructions on the package.
Usually these are them:
- Boiling water in a saucepan.
- Adding rice to the boiling water.
- Reduce heat and allow rice to simmer until it becomes tender and absorbs the water.
Once cooked, fluff the rice with a fork and allow it to cool slightly before adding it to the casserole.
Prepare the Broccoli
Wash the broccoli thoroughly under running water.
Using a knife and cutting board, cut the broccoli into small bite-sized florets. The florets should be small enough to distribute evenly throughout the casserole.
Cook the broccoli by either:
- Steaming it for several minutes, or
- Boiling it briefly in water.
Layer the Rice in the Dish
Once the rice is ready, spread the 2 cups of cooked rice evenly across the bottom of the dish.
Use a spoon or spatula to smooth the rice into a flat layer so that it covers the entire base of the dish. This layer is the foundation of the casserole.
Add the Broccoli Layer
Take the cooked broccoli and distribute it evenly across the top of the rice layer.
Make sure the broccoli is spread across the entire dish instead of one area. This makes sure each person gets a portion of vegetables.
Prepare the Creamy Chicken Mixture
In a large mixing bowl, combine the following ingredients:
- Shredded cooked chicken
- Cream of chicken soup
- Half of the shredded cheddar cheese
- Sour cream
- Mayonnaise
- Lemon juice
- Salt
- Black pepper
Use a spoon or spatula to mix the ingredients together thoroughly until the mixture becomes smooth and well combined. The goal is to evenly distribute the sauce so that each bite of the casserole has a creamy texture and flavor.
Assemble the Casserole
Carefully pour the chicken mixture over the broccoli layer in the baking dish.
Use a spoon to spread the mixture evenly so that it covers all the broccoli and rice beneath it. This layer should reach the edges of the dish to ensure it is even.
Add the Cheese Topping
Sprinkle the remaining half of the shredded cheese evenly across the top of the casserole.
The cheese will melt during baking and create a crispy top layer.
Bake the Casserole
Place the assembled casserole into the preheated oven.
Bake the casserole for approximately 40 minutes. During this time, the ingredients will heat through, the sauce will bubble, and the cheese will melt and start to brown on the top.
Allow the Casserole to Rest
Once the casserole has finished baking, carefully remove it from the oven using oven mitts.
Let the casserole sit and cool for about five minutes before serving. This resting period lets the sauce thicken and makes the casserole easier to cut into portions.
Serve the Dish
After resting, cut the casserole into serving portions using a spatula.
Serve warm as a main dish. The casserole goes well with a side salad or bread.
