Japanese Gourd 3d Model
A simple model of a Japanese gourd, based on the real life gourds used for centuries
Supplies
Fusion 360 is used for this creation, and the guide will assume you are using it
Circle Base
Begin by creating a sketch, use the center diameter circle tool to create a circle with a 1in diameter. then measure 1.5in down and create another circle with a diameter to make a circle with a 1.5 meter diameter
Connect Circles
Select the Fit Point Spline tool and click the left most point of the bottom circle, then the point in between the top point and left point, then the space just under a fourth of the length of the top circle (don't worry too much about being precise, gourds come in many shapes!), then the point in between the top point and left point of the top circle, then the leftmost point of the top circle. (construction circles provided in image to help visualize, not featured in design)
Make Top
start by making a line on the top of the gourd, make it 0.1in long, then create a line 90 degree to the right that is 0.05in long, then extend a line strait down from that lines end until it touches the gourd again.
Measure 0.05in out from the right line, then straight down onto where it touches with the gourd, start a fit point spline from that location and make the second point halfway up the gourd top, then grab the furthest green point (the one controlling the shape of the spline) and place it on the line of the top (image 3)
Finally fillet the top corner by 0.01in
Hollow Out
Create a line dividing the gourd in half vertically, use the trim tool (in modify) to cut off everything to the right of the line, additionally trim the in between segments of the gourd circles.
Select the offset tool (in modify) and offset each piece of the left side of the gourd inward by 0.05in, then connect the line at the bottom (extend tool will work well for this), then look to the top
At the top, start a line halfway at the top point and make it straight down through the gourd outline and offset, then trim off what is in between the just created line and the middle line, then trim off the tail of the line to make a closed shape (image 7)
Finish
Finish the sketch, use the rotate tool, select the closed shape and the middle line as it's axis. If a problem occurred, look for possible oddities with space splines made, if you would like to resize or mold parts of the gourd you can also drag splines in edit sketch. You may now print and enjoy
