KiCAD Alternative Softwares

introooo.jpeg

There are many alternative softwares for kiCAD, they are all used to form a schematic design then turn it into a PCB design and some of them draw PCB only.

Why we may search for other softwares?

Actually, everyone search for the more easier way to do his job, so apps are trying to be more easier in the way we use it and try to have more tools and make a space for the developer to make their own changes in the way they use the apps.

So, every one search for the software or the platform that he feel comfortable using it and also for the cheaper one or even the free one that he know he can do the job perfectly using it.

Firstly: KiCAD is an electronics design suite that helps design printed circuit and electronic schematic boards. This lightweight Windows application comes equipped with several dedicated parameters. The schematic editor offers you the option to configure existing page settings, carry out basic editing operations, redo, or undo actions, and choose from the different library components. The tool lets you upload NET files, record macros, view chosen footprint, assign hotkeys, etc. Moreover, the program lets you access Gerber files’ contents to analyses copper layers, drill holes, solder mask, etc. of the circuit board image.

PROS
Easy to use

Open-source and lightweight

Built-in calculator is great

Supports various output formats

CONS
Not beginner-friendly

Looks unlike most CAD software

Pre-built components are tough to find

Working with libraries can be confusing

THEN,
Here some alternatives for the KiCAD:

• Altium Designer.

ALTIUM DESIGNER 2.png

Altium Designer 20 represents decades of innovation and development dedicated to creating a truly unified design environment - one that enables users to effortlessly connect with every facet of the PCB design process. Striking the perfect balance between power and ease of use, Altium Designer has secured its position as the most widely-used PCB design solution on the market.

Here is some of the features and options in the app that is important for the user to concern about:

Schematic Capture/ Hierarchical & Multi-channel Design/ Unified Library Management/ Mixed Simulation/ Board Layout/ Multi-Board / Rigid-Flex/ Interactive Routing/ High Speed & High-Density Design/ MCAD Collaboration/ Data Management Manufacturing Outputs/ Fabrication Drawings.

You can download the free trail of the app but to use the full
features You need to buy it

Size:1.6GB Cost: 745 $/year

PROS
UI of software is nice

Nice Feature Provided by Altium

Custom library option

Autoroute option is really amazing, works really fine.

CONS
It's expensive.

When project is too heavy 3D visualizations slow down the application and may cause the computer to crash

Altium likes to crash multiple times per day

• Dip Trace

Here is another platform used for designing and drawing of circuits and boards with some different features from the others.

DipTrace is a professional tool that's not exactly easy for those that have not got much electronic know how but it does produce stunning results. DipTrace allows you to import projects and libraries such as LT Spice, CAD, Accel, Allegro, Mentor, Protel among many others so professionals will find this a really useful complementary tool to their existing toolbox. Creating projects is simple - it just requires dragging and dropping of all the components you need into the work area and then you subsequently make connections between pins to create your own circuit. If you're not sure whether your circuit will work, there is a useful validator which checks whether what you've built will actually work in the real world. If you have gone wrong, DipTrace can suggest how it can be fixed or even automatically shift components into the right position which is where this program excels where others fail.

Size:1.3GB Cost: 595$ for the full version

PROS
Produces very professional results

Supports drag and drop

Auto suggests new circuits

CONS
Not suitable for beginners

Takes a long term to learn

OrCAD Capture.

orcad2 - Copy.png

The Allegro engine powers OrCAD and your productivity. PCB layout and high-speed routing are no match for your skills, and a little real-time electronic design feedback from the tool. With OrCAD, you can produce a manufacturable board design faster. Streamline the creation of your more complex schematic designs with hierarchical, reuse, and variant design capabilities. Accelerate your design process and lower project costs with an integrated component information system (OrCAD CIS). Analyze your designs to meet project goals and achieve first-pass success with signal integrity, analog/mixed-signal, and constraint development flows. Make use of multiple CAD netlist interfaces to extend OrCAD Capture into multi-vendor flows allowing you to standardize on a common front-end solution. Custom tailor your OrCAD environment to enhance and extend it with the ability to create custom features, solutions, and flows. Speed your way through tedious or complex design tasks with extensive schematic entry capabilities that enhance usability and boost productivity.

Size:1.5GB Cost: not mentioned

PROS
user friendly GUI and adaptability with the other schematics.

you can simulate with cadence simulator easily.

Each feature has its own program; nothing is integrated.

CONS
The capture and layout design should be all together as Altium Designer. They should provide more libraries for free of cost.

while exporting output documents, they should come in proper formats like excel.

when it comes to connecting bigger schematic the dots and grids resolution is not good

• Autodesk EAGLE.

Eagle.png

Autodesk EAGLE is an electronic design automation (EDA) software. Enabling printed circuit board (PCB) designers to seamlessly connect schematic diagrams, component placement, PCB routing, and comprehensive library content. Quickly test your ideas and validate circuit performance with a complete suite of spice simulation methods. Drag and drop reusable design blocks between your projects, complete with synchronized schematic and PCB circuitry. Precisely arrange and order PCB design objects with a complete set of alignment tools. Route complex PCB layouts and maneuver around your design to easily get your trace to its destination. Do not rely on luck to fit your board in its enclosure. Quickly test your ideas and validate circuit performance with a complete suite of SPICE simulation methods.
