MAD SCIENTIST SWITCH PLATE

Every mad scientist needs a massive power switch to energize their monster or to power up whatever crazy invention they have created. This simply replaces any “Decorator“ style switch plate and the lever actuates the rocker mechanism of the switch. A great way to add a spooky dimension to any room, or for a Halloween decoration.

See Step 4 for alternative low voltage applications.

Supplies

“Decorator” switch plate

5mm Baltic birch plywood

paint stick

1/2” dowel about 4” long

1” pine cut to width of paint stick

1/4” bolts with wing nuts, washers, lock washers

Wood glue

Sandpaper

Acrylic paints

1/2” Brad nails

Tools mentioned in each step

CUT THE PARTS

IMG_0406.jpeg

Base: Cut the Baltic birch to 6”x 7”

Trace the interior outline of the Decorator plate and the location of the two holes on the centre line of the base

Cut out the switch profile with a scroll saw, drill the two holes 1/8” and countersink them

Handle: Cut one piece of pine to 3” and drill a 1/2” hole dead centre for the dowel handle

Cut two pieces of paint stick to 2,1/4”-round one end of each. Drill a 1/4” hole in the centre of each round

Pivots: Cut two pieces of pine to 1,1/8”-round one end of each and drill a 1/4” hole in the centre of the round

Sand everything

ASSEMBLE THE PIECES

Handle: Nail and glue the two flat paint stick pieces to each end of the 3” pine piece. Glue the dowel to the hole in the pine piece

Base: Using the switch handle as a guide, locate the two pivot pieces on either side of it on the middle line of the base. Nail and glue them in place.

When dry, assemble temporarily and test.

NOTE: If the switch doesn’t click, drive a short wood screw in the centre of the 3” part of the lever where it contacts the switch, each side. You can adjust it till it actuates.

PAINT AND RE-ASSEMBLE/ INSTALL

Paint the base (I used antique bronze acrylic)

Paint the handle ( I used black) You want to create an aged, much used patina.

When dry, put it together again. The lock washers will keep tension on the handle so it remains in place and can be tightened with the wing nuts.

Install it in place of the original plate over any Decorator switch.

Pretend you are Dr. Frankenstein or Igor when you turn your lights on and off.

LOW VOLTAGE APPLICATIONS

If you want to switch low voltage, battery operated devices, simply install a decorator switch on the plate using the two small mounting screws.. Cut one wire of your device and attach the two cut wires to the connections on the switch. Great for Halloween decorations.

HOTE: If you do this, use it for low voltage only!
