Magic Lantern - Early Image Projector
Hi everyone! Today Iโm going to make a Magic Lantern ๐ฎโจ, one of the earliest image projectors ever created. Back in the 1600s and 1700s, people wanted a way to project images onto walls and screens, and this fascinating invention became their solution ๐ฅ
The Magic Lantern used a simple light projection system to display painted images, making it one of the most impressive visual inventions of its time ๐ฏ๏ธ Even with its simple design, it amazed people and felt almost magical to those who saw it.
So, letโs see how we can recreate this incredible old invention ourselves ๐ ๏ธ๐
Supplies
Spray paint can (black)
Paint Brush
Gold color
1 black 2 inch PVC pipes
2 PVC pipe connector
4Bolts and nuts
1pencil
1 black pen
rulers
Ice cream sticks
Glue bottle
Magnifying glass
Masking tape
Small cardboard box
MDF / hardboard sheets (different sizes)
Cutting the MDF Pieces
First, take the MDF sheets and cut them according to the measurements shown in my diagram ๐๐ชต
Painting the Parts
Next, we need to paint all the parts black ๐จ๐ค
This includes the MDF pieces, the small cardboard box, the two 2 inch PVC pipes, and the PVC pipe connectors.
For this step, Iโm using black spray paint because it gives a smooth and clean finish โจ Make sure to coat all the parts evenly and let them dry properly before moving to the next step.
Adding the Gold Details
Next, we need to add some gold lines around the cardboard box โจ๐ฆ
To make this easier, I first placed a few strips of white tape around the box, leaving small gaps between them. This helps create clean and even lines when painting ๐จ
After that, I painted over the box with the gold color. Once the paint dried, I carefully removed the tape to reveal the neat gold line design underneath ๐ค๐
You can see how I painted it by looking at the photos I shared ๐ธ
Decorating the MDF Panels
Next, we also need to add gold lines to the MDF pieces โจ๐ชต
I used the same method as before by placing tape around the edges and leaving a small gap in the middle to create a frame style design ๐จ
After painting and removing the tape, the MDF panels get a really clean and classic look ๐ค๐ You can clearly see the design in my photos ๐ธ
If you have your own design ideas, feel free to try them as well and make it unique โจ
Adding Gold Lines to the PVC Parts
Now itโs time to decorate the PVC parts as well โจ๐ค
I added a strip of tape to the front side of the PVC connector and painted a neat gold line around it ๐จ๐
These small gold details help give the projector a more vintage and old fashioned appearance while also making all the parts match together beautifully ๐ฎ๐ฝ๏ธ
Attaching the Magnifying Glass
Next, we need to attach the magnifying glass to the PVC connector ๐โจ
Apply some glue inside the PVC connector and carefully place the magnifying glass in the center, just like I showed in my photos ๐ธ
Make sure it is fixed properly and sits evenly, because this lens is the main part that helps project the image clearly ๐ฝ๏ธ๐ค
Making the Image Slides
Next, we need to make the image slides for our projector ๐๏ธโจ
For this step, you can print any pictures you like and use them for the projection ๐ผ๏ธ
First, take a glass slide and place three pieces of tape on it to create three small window sections, just like shown in my first photo ๐ธ After that, paint the surrounding area black ๐จ๐ค
Finally, remove the tape pieces and place the transparent printed images into those clear sections. This will create the projection slides for the Magic Lantern ๐ฎ๐ฝ๏ธ
Building the Front Slide Holder
Next, we need to make the front window section that holds and moves the image slides ๐ชตโจ
To build this part, take a few ice cream sticks and cut them according to the shape shown in my photos ๐ธ Then use wood glue to assemble all the pieces together carefully.
I have shown the whole process clearly in the photos, so take a close look and build it step by step the same way ๐ ๏ธ๐ฎ
Assembling the Slide Windows
Now we need to attach the two ice cream stick windows together using 4 bolts and nuts ๐ฉโจ
While assembling them, make sure to leave a small gap in the middle, because that space is where the image slide will fit ๐๏ธ
Drill four holes in the corners of the stick frames, place the nuts in between, and then tighten the 4 bolts carefully ๐ ๏ธ
Take a good look at my third & fourth photo to clearly understand how this part is assembled ๐ธ
Assembling the Main Body
Now itโs time to assemble everything together and build the main projector body ๐ฎ๐ ๏ธ
First, attach the MDF panels we finished earlier around the cardboard box. Check my first, second, and third photos to see how I placed them neatly around the box ๐ธโจ
This becomes the main structure of our projector.
After that, attach the slide window section we made earlier to the front side of the box using the 4 bolts, just like shown in my fourth photo ๐ฉ
Cuting Front Window Hole
Remember to cut out a small window opening in the MDF panel at the front. This is important because the image slide needs to fit through that section ๐๏ธ
The light from inside the projector must pass through the image slide properly for the projection to work clearly ๐ก๐ฝ๏ธ
Final Assembly
And now, weโve finally reached the end of the build ๐๐ฎ
Our project is almost complete!
The only thing left to do is attach the PVC lens head to the front of the projector. Once the PVC head is connected, the whole projector gets a beautiful vintage appearance โจ๐ฝ๏ธ
You can also insert the image slides into the front holder section we made earlier ๐๏ธ
At the back of the box, simply place a light source or torch inside ๐ก
Finally, take the projector into a dark room, point it toward a wall, and enjoy the amazing projection effect it creates ๐โจ
I hope you all enjoyed this old style projector build and found it as fascinating as I did ๐ค๐
