Hi everyone! Today Iโ€™m going to make a Magic Lantern ๐Ÿ”ฎโœจ, one of the earliest image projectors ever created. Back in the 1600s and 1700s, people wanted a way to project images onto walls and screens, and this fascinating invention became their solution ๐ŸŽฅ

The Magic Lantern used a simple light projection system to display painted images, making it one of the most impressive visual inventions of its time ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Even with its simple design, it amazed people and felt almost magical to those who saw it.

So, letโ€™s see how we can recreate this incredible old invention ourselves ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ๐Ÿ“œ

Supplies

Spray paint can (black)

Paint Brush

Gold color

1 black 2 inch PVC pipes

2 PVC pipe connector

4Bolts and nuts

1pencil

1 black pen

rulers

Ice cream sticks

Glue bottle

Magnifying glass

Masking tape

Small cardboard box

MDF / hardboard sheets (different sizes)

Cutting the MDF Pieces

First, take the MDF sheets and cut them according to the measurements shown in my diagram ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿชต

Painting the Parts

Next, we need to paint all the parts black ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ–ค

This includes the MDF pieces, the small cardboard box, the two 2 inch PVC pipes, and the PVC pipe connectors.

For this step, Iโ€™m using black spray paint because it gives a smooth and clean finish โœจ Make sure to coat all the parts evenly and let them dry properly before moving to the next step.

Adding the Gold Details

20260502_165304.jpg
20260502_171910.jpg
20260502_172154.jpg

Next, we need to add some gold lines around the cardboard box โœจ๐Ÿ“ฆ

To make this easier, I first placed a few strips of white tape around the box, leaving small gaps between them. This helps create clean and even lines when painting ๐ŸŽจ

After that, I painted over the box with the gold color. Once the paint dried, I carefully removed the tape to reveal the neat gold line design underneath ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

You can see how I painted it by looking at the photos I shared ๐Ÿ“ธ

Decorating the MDF Panels

20260503_135900.jpg
20260503_154918.jpg

Next, we also need to add gold lines to the MDF pieces โœจ๐Ÿชต

I used the same method as before by placing tape around the edges and leaving a small gap in the middle to create a frame style design ๐ŸŽจ

After painting and removing the tape, the MDF panels get a really clean and classic look ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’› You can clearly see the design in my photos ๐Ÿ“ธ

If you have your own design ideas, feel free to try them as well and make it unique โœจ

Adding Gold Lines to the PVC Parts

20260503_020625.jpg

Now itโ€™s time to decorate the PVC parts as well โœจ๐Ÿ–ค

I added a strip of tape to the front side of the PVC connector and painted a neat gold line around it ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ’›

These small gold details help give the projector a more vintage and old fashioned appearance while also making all the parts match together beautifully ๐Ÿ”ฎ๐Ÿ“ฝ๏ธ

Attaching the Magnifying Glass

20260502_200850.jpg

Next, we need to attach the magnifying glass to the PVC connector ๐Ÿ”โœจ

Apply some glue inside the PVC connector and carefully place the magnifying glass in the center, just like I showed in my photos ๐Ÿ“ธ

Make sure it is fixed properly and sits evenly, because this lens is the main part that helps project the image clearly ๐Ÿ“ฝ๏ธ๐Ÿ–ค

Making the Image Slides

20260502_235952.jpg
20260503_021322.jpg
20260503_022012.jpg
20260503_104921.jpg

Next, we need to make the image slides for our projector ๐ŸŽž๏ธโœจ

For this step, you can print any pictures you like and use them for the projection ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ

First, take a glass slide and place three pieces of tape on it to create three small window sections, just like shown in my first photo ๐Ÿ“ธ After that, paint the surrounding area black ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ–ค

Finally, remove the tape pieces and place the transparent printed images into those clear sections. This will create the projection slides for the Magic Lantern ๐Ÿ”ฎ๐Ÿ“ฝ๏ธ

Building the Front Slide Holder

20260502_183843.jpg
20260502_194136.jpg
20260502_194829.jpg
20260502_195937.jpg

Next, we need to make the front window section that holds and moves the image slides ๐Ÿชตโœจ

To build this part, take a few ice cream sticks and cut them according to the shape shown in my photos ๐Ÿ“ธ Then use wood glue to assemble all the pieces together carefully.

I have shown the whole process clearly in the photos, so take a close look and build it step by step the same way ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฎ

Assembling the Slide Windows

20260503_155053.jpg
20260503_160512.jpg
20260503_161414.jpg
20260503_161455.jpg

Now we need to attach the two ice cream stick windows together using 4 bolts and nuts ๐Ÿ”ฉโœจ

While assembling them, make sure to leave a small gap in the middle, because that space is where the image slide will fit ๐ŸŽž๏ธ

Drill four holes in the corners of the stick frames, place the nuts in between, and then tighten the 4 bolts carefully ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

Take a good look at my third & fourth photo to clearly understand how this part is assembled ๐Ÿ“ธ

Assembling the Main Body

20260503_172917.jpg
20260503_173023.jpg
20260503_173203.jpg

Now itโ€™s time to assemble everything together and build the main projector body ๐Ÿ”ฎ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

First, attach the MDF panels we finished earlier around the cardboard box. Check my first, second, and third photos to see how I placed them neatly around the box ๐Ÿ“ธโœจ

This becomes the main structure of our projector.

After that, attach the slide window section we made earlier to the front side of the box using the 4 bolts, just like shown in my fourth photo ๐Ÿ”ฉ

Cuting Front Window Hole

20260503_183212.jpg
20260503_183309.jpg
20260503_183212.jpg

Remember to cut out a small window opening in the MDF panel at the front. This is important because the image slide needs to fit through that section ๐ŸŽž๏ธ

The light from inside the projector must pass through the image slide properly for the projection to work clearly ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ“ฝ๏ธ

Final Assembly

20260504_003504.jpg

And now, weโ€™ve finally reached the end of the build ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ”ฎ

Our project is almost complete!

The only thing left to do is attach the PVC lens head to the front of the projector. Once the PVC head is connected, the whole projector gets a beautiful vintage appearance โœจ๐Ÿ“ฝ๏ธ

You can also insert the image slides into the front holder section we made earlier ๐ŸŽž๏ธ

At the back of the box, simply place a light source or torch inside ๐Ÿ’ก

Finally, take the projector into a dark room, point it toward a wall, and enjoy the amazing projection effect it creates ๐ŸŒ™โœจ

I hope you all enjoyed this old style projector build and found it as fascinating as I did ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ“œ
